Well my sand bed isnt deep enough to keep the tube nem happy. Plus with the flow in my tank it is going to get beat to death.

Solution :

Project 105 - Page 3 DSCF6001
Project 105 - Page 3 DSCF6002

1.5 " PVC siliconed to a piece of acrylic. The pvc will allow me to insert the nem into the tubing and surround it with sand to protect the whole tube of the nem, and the acrylic will keep the sand from slipping out of the bottom of the pvc. I will then slide it into a cave in my rock work to protect it from the turbulent flow.

Hope it works as planned.

That's a pretty good solution for your tube anemone and shallow sand bed.....

the cool thing is, its hidden pretty well by the surrounding rock. In a month or so it will be coraline covered then be "reef camo" Very Happy

So far it seems to be working pretty well, but time will be the true test.

What and how often are you feeding your tube anemone? Do you feed it during the day or at night?

I feed it mysis, small pieces of krill, brine, cyclops, rotifers. Pretty much whatever I grab, LOL. I do feed during the day, as mine is open during the day. So far I have been feeding on avg, 4 times per week but may increase to small daily feedings. It is a really cool addition to the tank, and the colors rival even the brightest SPS. the pics I have posted really do not do it justice.

Bryan - First, thanks for posting your design!! I copied your idea and made a tube for a tube anemone I recently received.

Question:

I managed to get the tube filled, roughly 60%, with sand. I would like to continue filling the tube to get the anemone closer to the opening. Will the anemone work it's way back to the surface if I fill the tube the rest of the way with sand. I was a bit concerned about covering the anemone with sand.

I think if you can just bury the foot a little then it will bury itself. It does it pretty quickly too. When I took it out of my tank I put it in a bowl of sand and by morning it was completely buried again. They can push themselves out of the sand too. My mantis covered it one time and I thought it was gone but it pushed itself back up through the sand in no time.

Great idea on the "PVC Sand bed". +1 on the design "stolen" by others. Laughing

The superman monti is a pain in the booty! Mine was always going back and forth. One little change and it would darken up. Might try another one in my new tank to see if I have better luck this time.

It's awesome!!! Mine darkened and lightened while I was struggling with phosphates but it's been locked in for a while now. Growing really fast now. I'll put pics up tommorrow when I'm not on my phone.

Post by ritter678 Wed 09 Feb 2011, 11:43 am

I have mine high in the tank underneath a power head so it's getting good light and flow. It was growing well and colored up a nice blue at first and I started having nutrient issues so it stopped growing for a while and the blue got really dark. I started running a carbon/gfo reactor recently and I did too much too fast and over shot the color and it started to bleach. I think I have everything settled now and it has been a nice color for a few months now and it's starting to really grow fast. This was one of the first sps corals I had so it survived all my learning experiences. Where it encrusts over the rock it wipes out a clean area ahead of it. It's a fast grower if everything is in check. Keeping sps has really helped me learn how to run a tank properly. I think if I knew what I was doing to begin with the growth would have been a lot better. I never fixed it to anything either and it had to attach itself to the rock. This is a pic from a few weeks ago. It's getting bigger everyday. One of my favorites.
