Trade Hermit Crab for snails or shrimp or.....

Post by grawlfang on Fri 10 Feb 2012, 10:01 am

I have 3-4 regular red and blue legged Hermit crabs 1/2 to 1 1/2" in size to trade for something Smile I don't have many large snails yet and the larger one has killed 2 in the last week and not even taking their shell. A question I have is there a true benefit to having Hermit crabs? do they control any pests or anything?

They'll eat detritus and algae. I just bought 5 more yesterday. They're good guys to have around. They'll occasionally kill a snail for their shell, which is kind of annoying, but I think they're still worth having around. I wish I had gone with all scarlet reef hermits instead of blue legs... but what's done is done. :-)

If you go to Hobby Lobby or Michaels you can find bags of snail shells for $2-3.
We sorted through them and put "the next size" shells in. It worked to some degree, one or two of the small blue legged evicted snails, but the red legged have used the Shell for Rent we supplied.

I am not a big advocate of snails. They knock a lotta stuff around. Hermits don't seem to be nearly as bad about it to me. Just mt .02
