Foxface not looking good!! Empty Foxface not looking good!!

Post by Burgess' Mon 27 Feb 2012, 8:17 pm

I've had him for about 4 months and he has always been very active. Yesterday his color was bad and he sat behind a rock all day. Same thing today. I tested my water last night and all is fine. I did a water change on Friday and also changed the carbon in the media bag. Any ideas??

Any sign of parasites or disease? What are you feeding it? Any other fish in the tank that would harass it? I wouldn't worry too much yet. Foxfaces will act weird at times. Two days does seem a bit long though.

Get him some Nori soaked in garlic to try to get him to eat. If you can keep him eating it's chances will be a lot better. What other fish are in the tank?

Just a couple of clowns and blennys. Do I need to get one of the garlic extract to do that. Should I have been offering notice to him all along.

Harassing fish don't seem to be the problem.

You can buy the Nori with garlic flavor at an aquarium store.

Yes, Foxface needs algae based foods like Tangs do. Nori sheets on a veggie clip works great. My fish seem to be scared of it at first until they take a taste but once they get used to it fish like tangs and foxface will knock out a small strip of Nori in minutes.

OK now he is laying on the sand still breathing. I don't know doesn't look good to me. Guess I will see how he does. All the other fish and LPS look good.

Well, doesn't sound good. If he makes any improvements get him some algae ASAP. Mysis, pellets (unless algae based), and meaty foods aren't really on the menu for Foxface. They will eat them but algae is what they need.

I'm not saying that is why the fish is down, especially since you said there was algae in the tank. A foxface will eat algae all day long if it's available. They are pigs.

If there is no sign of parasites or illness then there is not much you can do except try to get it to eat.

How does the stomach look? Is it pinched in or does it look fat?

Stomach looks OK not fat but not skin and bones. I had a bad hair algae problem when I got him. I have been picking it and working on getting my water right. Now there is little to no hair algae. Maybe I have gotten rid of his main food source. I just put a small strip or Noriega on the clip ill see if he is interested. He is back up right so who knows.

I don't want anyone to think I'm saying the Foface took care of my hair algae problem. I know he did eat it as I saw him. I also increased my water changes, added a phosban reactor, changed my t5 bulbs, added more snails and crabs and did a whole bunch of picking and scrubbing rocks. I will never let hair algae get ahead of me again. It took many weeks to get it under control.

That's the ticket! If anyone has a hair algae problem what they really have is a phosphate problem. If they remove all of the hair algae without fixing the phosphate issue then the phosphates will really get bad when there's no hair algae to keep it down!
