Post by Cichlid Lover Thu 15 Mar 2012, 12:02 pm

I am in search and great need of Texas Holey Rock. I have two 55 gallon and one 60 gallon and need holey rock for my cichlids. I am a FW tanker and I raise African, South American cichlids, and Guppies.

I have 50 lbs of dark pink gravel, a 1 ft pleco, orange zebra cichlids for sale or trade.

Thanks for looking! Shocked

Matt has a bunch. Was used as base rock in a reef tank, but will work fine for Cichlids. You might "PM" him and see if he will part with any.

J. Davis,

Yes, I am buying the rest of what Matt has. I am still in need of 3 large pieces for center pieces in a 55, another 55, and a 65 gallon. So please message me if you know of anyone that has some larger pieces of Texas Holey Rock. Thanks!!

Thank you for the offer on setting up the tank but I set it up last night. Michael helped me with the larger stone. We were pleased to meet you and your wife as well.

The tank set up beautifully! We went online and down loaded the manual for the Rena and followed the instructions for getting started. We got the rock set in good but got the largest one turned backwards from the way you had it. We didnt mean to but we are not changing it due to its massive size. I absolutely love the entire set up with the exception of the stand and I can live with that until I run across a stand for sale at a good price, later.

I got up this morning and most, if not all, of my fish were at the top of the water with somewhat labored breathing. I thought we have a low oxygen problem so I got a air pump, 2 lines and 2 air stones and within 3 minutes they were swimming around and acting normal. I've never had that happen before but I have never used the Rena xp 4 either. My question is do I need to use a source of air? I guess I could run a bubble bar across the back. Tank is clear.

Hmm no i nevrr ran airstones... that's odd... never experienced that before. The hood has plenty of room at the back to let in air. Did you use fresh tapwater to fill thw tank??? Its also cycling that new filter, keep up with some extra water changes to prevent an ammonia spike

I agree keep up with the water changes, you shouldn't need to add an air stone. If you used tap water I would invest in a RO system. what are your test readings on water quality? (ammonia, nitrates, PH, Salinity)? there are more but these will give a good reading on where your tank is at.

Salinity is likely 0. :-)

I'm sure you know this Michelle, but you can point a powerhead across the top of the tank to increase oxygen transfer also if you don't like the bubbler look.

Lol sg is 1.026 why are my cichlids floating? Loljk

Instead of a powerhea just rotate that spraybar on the cani ister. Slightly upwards and it will give you good surface action and get those o2 lvls back up. Not so much that it gets things wet tho

A possible thing to consider if you are running a new filter, in a new tank, with new sand etc. Then you have zero bacteria for breaking the Ammonia to Nitrites and then on to Nitrates.

I would grab a filter from one of your other tanks and take the filter medium (sponge) and place that either in the rena, or give it a rinse with some water from one of your established tanks, not tap water, and place that in the tank.
This will help you boost the Rena's build up of bacteria.

The other way would be to buy a bottle of the "Instant bacteria" type of thing. I've never used one in my FW tanks, as I used the filter medium from another tank.

Matts suggestion of the powerhead is good too. This tends to give more air to water surface movement, compared to a bubble stone. I use bubble stones though in areas of the tank, where the mass of holey rock is tending to restrict water movement.

Hope this helps.

How many Cichlids do you have in the tank, and what size are they?

Yeti,

Just bought the tank last night, brought it home and set it up. The tank was purchased from Win whom is a member of this forum. It was up and running when I bought it. So, that being said, we left the crushed coral/sand and holey rock that came in the tank, isnt it established? Or at least more on its way than if I had started from scratch?

5 Ice Blue Red Fin cichlids 3 - 5in, 2 Ice White Red Fin cichlids 5in, 8 Red Zebra cichlids 3 to 6 in, 4 convicts. So 21 fish or so 3 to 6 inches long.

My filter is a Rena xP 4, filters 450 gallons per hour, rated for a 265 gallon aquarium. The media in the boxes have been used so hopefully that will help with the biological breakdown. Do I still need to get some media from another tank and use it in this tank? The water is not as clear as I would like.

What cichlids do you have? And what set up are you using?

Thanks for helping me Basketball

Win,

Should I do a partial water change in 2 weeks or sooner if needed? It is odd and I havnt ever had it happen either. But the air stones did the trick. I left the stones in there and I adjusted the spray arm. Everything is fine, just needed to get some info on the options. The water is not as clear as I would like to see it.
I guess I could cut the blue part of a filter from my other 55 gallon established tank and put it in my pump, would that help?

You should treat that like you just set it up, that rena filter wasn't used for months, thus there wouldn't be much if any bilogic fltration for atleast a month, and that's alot of dang fish to cycle a new filter with... you will really need to be dilligent on your water changes for the next few weeks. Test your water often, specifically ammonia. Id do 25% once a week at minimum, more if test indicate its needed. Adding media from another filter won't hurt a thing. Infact you could just put one of your hobs on temporarily. Also moving some fish to a dif tank if possible and adding them back gradually as the filter gets established.

Yea its a brute of a filter, but its 100% biological in design, ths no carbon in it unless you added some. So it won't be effective untill it cycles and builds up the bacterial colonys. Down the road it can easily handle that bioload of your fish, butwithout the bacteria your really just pumping water through a sponge at 450gph

I am moving the red zebras and my highfin out of the new tank tonight. I have a 50 gallon tank that I just resealed. That will put the new tank back to only your fish in the tank. That will take some of the load off the tank. And I'll add a HOB to help get the tank established well.

thanks for responding!

Hi
If you can, I would suggest reducing the bio load even more on the tank, or are you moving an HOB from a currently running tank to the 55G to support the Rena?

I have 2 x 55G Cichlid tanks + Australia.
1) Mbuna and Johannes. Male Kenya in full colour is the boss man, some Powder Blue Socolofi, Red Top Ice Blue, and a couple of hybrids. Total is I think 7 in that tank.

2) Rainbow + Haps. 1 (Blue) German Red Male, 2 Male Sunshines, 1 Male Verginalis, 2 Mchenga & 2 Peacock females. + A few developing fry.
1 Featherfin & 1 smaller breed of Plec (This guy is now 3-4 years old and still only about 3-4 inches long.... perfect size)

Australia - Bad boy tank (20 Long) Houses my Red Zebra and largest Powder Blue, both were ravaging all the other Mbuna, so they have their own place.

South America (Acidic water bias) 6 Clown Loaches, 2 Angels and a couple of Tetras.

Mrs Y has:
Catfish Heaven 4 Large Pictus, and enormous Raphael and a good size Algae/Sucking Loach.

10G Betta & snails tank.

Well that's the FW side anyways.

I am now running an HOB on the new 55.

Gotta love the cichlids! I also have a 55 with several cichlids that I have no idea what type they are......bought them from pet store that had babies for $2.50.

1 looks like a giraffe, 3 are dark blue with black stripes, 2 are lemon yellow, 1 is lemon yellow with a black stripe down dorsal, 2 are orange with black splotches, 1 is colored like a brown trout but sometimes turns purple, and 1 jewel. Oh, and 2 albino. All of the above are 1 to 2 inches and in a very established tank. Any idea what any of those might be?

Thanks so very much for the help with my tank. I am pretty new at this.
