Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
A disappointing set back for certain, but glad you told us about it. I also thought that only the base of a 55 was tempered.

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
So did I. Not sure about the manufacturer of that tank. My new 55 is an Aqueon that I got on clearance at Petco. I called Aqueon to verify. Here is what I found out...
The chart on their website showing if the bottoms are tempered or not applies to their aquarium only models, not the ones sold as "kits". Since the kits are shipped with all the stuff that comes with them inside the tank, they are tempered on ALL sides to prevent breakage from rough handling. I confirmed this with the polarized sunglasses test which was the reason I called them to start with. I thought I was doing something wrong as my tank was showing siigns of being tempered on all sides. I didn't think to ask if that applied to all of their kits or just a certain size and larger but got the feeling that it applied to all kits.
Petco must have pieced out the components of the "kit" and I got the tank.
Live and learn!

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
Wow! Has it been a month since I updated this thread?
Well, had to change sump idea. The 55 gal wouldn't fit under the 125 gal and allow room for the overflow or return pipe. I didn't even consider this as many others use a 55 as a sump for a 125. Guess those are drilled reef tanks or the stands are different size. Good news is I now have a 55 gal to setup up later as another tank!
Found a good tank sale and got a 20 tall and a 20 long for $34.98. Gonna setup the tall as a refugium and the long will be hold the skimmer, bubble trap, LR rubble and return area. The tall will drain into the return area of the long.
Got the two tanks installed under the DT and the black background installed. Now to plumb it and start rock-scaping. Now I can make some progress.
Starting to think about stock. Only requirement is that I have at least one Yellow Tang And a Mandarin Goby mfor the wife. Any suggestions as to what will play nice with these in a FOWLR setup?

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
Final revisions to the sump area have been made as follows:
1) I made two overflows, one at each end of the tank. Spray painted satin black with Krylon Fusion that is tank safe and bonds to pvc so as not to be able to scrape off too easily.
2) Return is now in the middle of the tank.
3) Left overflow drains into the 20 Long which is divided as skimmer, bubble trap, LR rubble, then return.
4) Right overflow drain is split with ball valves on both to control flow. One leg flows into the 20 High for the refugium (6" DSB and Chaeto) and the other leg flows to the skimmer area of the 20 Long back on the left side. That way I can control the amount of flow into the fuge and divert the rest to the sump.
5) Fuge empties into the return area of the sump bypassing the skimmer so any pods that survive the return pump will end up in the DT as food.
Will post some pics after the returning home from the June ETAK meeting. I will have the pics on my iPad so anyone at the meeting will get to see them first. Boy do those black pipes blend in with the black background! The rocks and white sand are really gonna stand out.

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
Pics as promised...
Tank with black background, Marco Rock, overflows and return installed- ready for water.
Closeup of Marco Rock and painted overflow. Can you see them?
Left cabinet under DT contains sump. Note skimmer section, over-under-over bubble trap, flow through LR rubble then over to return. Pipe on right is overflow from refugium on right side. Two pipes on left side are overflows located on left and right side of DT.
Center cabinet contains return pipe and pump. You can also see overflow from fuge.
Right cabinet holds Refugium. Will have a 6" DSB in there. Overflow from right side is split so I can control the flow rate into the fuge and the rest goes to the skimmer area of the sump in the left cabinet.
Now to get it filled...

Nice job! See what you mean about the black pipes and black background.
Rock looks like some really nice pieces, and the sump etc looks really competent, really look forward to seeing it when its up and running.

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
Work has been a bear lately. Lots of 14 hour days so filling has been slow going. Hopefully by Sunday I will have a chance to get it fully filled and final testing done on the plumbing. If all goes well cycling starts monday. Will try to post some pictures of it completely set up Sunday.

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
Well this has been a long time coming but the tank is about ready for cycling!
With not much time each week to work on it, it is about time. I had a problem with my overflow and did a redesign. Got plenty of flow but ALOT of noise. Widened the pvc out to 6" at the intake and finally got a smooth flow with no noise. It sounds large but is not noticable painted black against the black background.
I also have a problem with tons of micro-bubbles in the DT. I got no bubbles coming through the bubble trap and only had a few in the return section from the last overflow. Guess the return pump is just chopping those few up into hundreds of micro-bubbles! I tried a temporary fix that stopped it cold! Now to make it permanent. Then ready to cycle.
I've been out of town alot for work so it has been slow going. But the light at the end of the tunnel is near!

TANK IS UP AND RUNNING!!!!!
No bubbles! Great flow! Absolutely no noise!
While I'm adjusting my salinity level,,,
... any suggestions on tank cycling procedure?

No. Marco Rocks. Great stuff. Huge surface area with lots of hiding spaces. The inhabitants should love it.

Re: Digger's 125gal FOWLR Build
Moved 3 Lyretail Anthias from QT to DT.
First fish in the newly cycled 125gal!! Four hours of lights out and two hours after that they would play peek-a-boo. Another hour and all three ate a little brine shrimp.
There are one male and two females. Both females are a reddish orange. The male is beautiful! His body is a light velvety red with the first spine on his dorsal fin being about half the length of his body. His pectoral fins are transparent with two dark pink spots. His anal fin is light yellow and pelvic fin is trimmed in purple. His caudal fin is also trimmed in purple.
I know! I know!
Pics in my show tank thread when they settle in better.
