Alright guy/gals, I am having a bit of a problem. I think my peppermint shrimp are ripping my corals from the rocks that they are on. Not all my corals just some Zoa's and some mushrooms. I say this because I have some yellow polyps that are being left alone and also some green mushrooms that are also being left alone. It's only a small Zoa colony and on the same rock it also has 4 mushrooms on it. One mushroom came off and I thought it was just the mushroom detaching itself from the rock and now another mushroom has started detaching itself as well. Also a couple of the Zoa's are about to come off as well. I always see one of my peppermint shrimp messing around with those corals though and it made me start thinking it was the shrimp and not the corals themselves doing it. I am unsure what to do about this but I am getting concerned about the survival of the corals now. I will post a couple pics if I can get some good ones. I am probably going to have to get rid of the shrimp if I had to guess and that alone is going to be an impossible task.

I have a ton of peppermint shrimp in my tank. I haven't had much problem with them but I do see them picking around the base of some corals. I've heard of them picking apart LPS for food and I have a large Acan with some ripped up heads on it so I suspect the shrimp but I haven't caught them doing it. It's one of those "chicken or the egg" things. Was the shrimp picking at the healthy coral or was the coral dying and then the shrimp pick it apart?

You could try a trap to catch the shrimp if you decide to get it out or a Hawkfish.

If you've got/had Aiptasia I'd consider them a necessary evil. If not... I'd try to trap them if you've determined it's them.

A few trap ideas.

A tall glass leaned slightly against the rocks. Put pellets in the bottom. They shouldn't be able to climb back out.

A coke bottle. Cut the top off, turn it upside down so that there's a funnel into the bottle. It's easy to get into, but difficult for them to get back out. Pellets in there as well.

The coral was not dying and even the pieces hanging off are opened up, bright and colorful. Like you I see them picking around the corals, seemingly at the live rock underneath and not the heads of the corals, but who knows.

Thanks for the trap idea's, I like the shrimp and hope I don't have to get rid of them but I will if I have to. They are fun to watch, my son has named them "Dodo 1" and "Dodo 2." They are a little crazy.

I will keep a close eye on them and see what happens. Thanks guys.
