If its red, its cyano bacteria, if its brown and looks dusty it is diatoms. Diatoms are a natural process of the cycle but cyano bacteria not so much. I wouldn't think cyano would be growing already but its possible. Are you using RO-DI water? Also, how long are you running lights?

Donnie,

I think this is brown.....not red. I am using RO/DI water. Kilgore water is orange and it stinks......cant use it for anything. Picture below:

Yeah, it definately looks like diatoms so not to worry its all part of the cycle, it will go away as the cycle progresses.

Hey Guys,

I know its been a long while but I've been fighting liver disease and and then was hit with new diagnosis of a pancreatic disorder caused from a very short attempt at chemo. The pancreas producing excessive amounts of insulin has caused me all kinds of trouble and I am struggling to recover but somewhat better now. The worst is hopefully past me now. Anyway........

My 37 gallon sw tank is doing very well, my husband has put a Red Sea Max 130 with totem on lay a way for me. I'm excited about that. I did get my 160 gallon custom tank delivered but havnt set it up due to health issues.

I have 2 clowns, a domino damsel, and a scooter blenny....along with my crab, turbo snail, and copa-pods.

I have a sump laying around that is rated for 75 gallon. I am wondering if I can use that on my 37 gallon gallon tall WITHOUT an overflow box? (I am trying to leave the hood on and dont see how I can do that with an overflow box)

CL

Best way to do it without a hob overflow is to drill it and put in a bulkhead. Since you are using the tank you can lower the water level and drill the back of the tank for an overflow. I don't have any diamond bits but I'm sure some of the guys on here might be willing to help ya out.

Thanks Donnie.......I am wondering .........my 37 tall has the tall hood has 2 large cut outs (cut outs are 3 in. tall by 2.5 in wide) in the back of the hood. Will this work without me drilling the tank? Hopefully pics load. I was thinking maybe something would work like my canister filter ........ a syphon side hose on one side and a return water on the other side.

No, BUT,You should be able to easily cut a spot out of the hood for an overflow box, its only plastic right? Just find you an overflow box first then use its measurements to cut the plastic. A Dremel tool would be perfect for cutting that if you have one, if not a pair of tin snips would work too. I can't tell how the hood is built for sure but it looks like it would be easy to cut.

Great!! It is plastic and I do have a Dremel tool.

I am not opposed to drilling the back......just dont have the tools right now. Thanks for the help. I'll be looking for an overflow for the 37 tall now. I'll post pics of the sump tonight.
