SciOps FW tank
Tired of seeing "New to the hobby" as my thread title, so I figured I'd start a new one. Here's the tank from the beginning to its current set up:
16g bowfront
gravel substrate
plastic plants
java moss *new as of 8/1/2012*
Aquaclear 30 HOB filter
100w heater
pirate ship deco
sandstone slabs
Current inhabitants:
dalmation molly
sunburst platy
red mickey mouse platy
red platy
5x neon tetra
2x apple snails
Tank has been running since April of this year.

Re: SciOps FW tank
Thank you for the moss, I decided to mesh it into one of the pads of artificial grass in the Peacock' s tank, it's allowed me to spread it out, with it snagging in the grass.
I'm hoping this will work, as Peacock's aren't that keen on eating vegatation. Now if my German Red male would just read the book, I will be fine.

No problem!
It looks like I need to either lower the water level or put something that extends above the water line for my snail to lay its eggs. They're found hooked together several times a day...

Re: SciOps FW tank
We have a small 10G tank which had snails breeding in, they would climb out onto the tank hood and lay there. The problem was that as we understand the process, they lay, then when ready, they fall off the egg perch back into the tank. Perhaps the heat of the light was too warm, or the surface of the plastic cover was to adherent, but non seemed to survive. So having something which extends out of the water but is close to the surface, keeping the eggs damp, may be the solution.
Good luck, and please let us know if you find a successful solution.

Re: SciOps FW tank
Just curious : where'd you find apple snails ? I thought they were banned in Texas. I kept them for years in the pond and the 77 gallon. In the pond they would lay egg clusters on any tall plant but in the tank they would lay on the insides of the light canopy .
I had a quintet of clown loaches at the time . They wouldn't bother the tennis-ball sized adults but the young were an excellent food source .

Pomacea bridgesii is what I have. Sold as "mystery snails". Whether this species will get to be 6" in diameter is doubtful, but it's classified as an apple snail to the best of my knowledge.

Re: SciOps FW tank
Found myself with a low pH issue which is probably why my platys haven't had any babies. My tetras are loving the 6.4 pH but I am trying to bring it back to a 7.0 so it's within the range of pH preferred by all inhabitants. I don't know why I didn't notice the incompatibility of the fish before, but I suppose I put too much trust in aqadvisor... I've added a small amount of crushed coral to the tank to try to change the alkalinity, and hopefully it brings the pH to the right level. If not, I can try a little more. Any other suggestions? I'm not interested in a chemical additive.

Re: SciOps FW tank
My question would be whats causing the pH to be so low? I don't see any swamp wood etc, which I know drops the pH.
I have cichlids, so I use Holey Rock, which makes my pH high, but my fear there would be if the acidic side disappears, you will then have swung the other way.

Re: SciOps FW tank
I have holey rock I can use but I fear the pH swing as you mentioned. I checked again during the day today and got a 6.4 reading again. I'm going to do more tests including some on my tap water and on water that has been dechlorinated, but I understand pH to be something that will stabilize based on conditions in the tank. As I see it, it's a test and see situation that I could have avoided by doing more tests early (my test kit included only a high range pH test until I finally thought about getting the 6.0-7.6 test).
