welcome and those small starfish are be beneficial, they will increase and decrease in numbers based on the food supply for them at least if this the small white starfish no bigger than an eraser head I have them all over both of my tanks.

Re: new to saltwater tanks
If they're on the glass and look like regular starfish , they're probably asterinas. The mini brittle stars tend to stay on/under the rocks.
Both are beneficial ( or at least non-detrimental ) IME.

Re: new to saltwater tanks
SciOps I warn you now, that if you set up a SW tank, you will be lost. If you are anything like me, just watching the critters appear from the rock had me hooked. Watching Astarina split into 2 or 3 new entities is amazing, watching the Ents as we call them "Stomatella" graze any and everywhere is great. Bristleworms at night, watching a sponge grow, and when I realised I had a Limpet. "Love, that shell has moved, I'm sure it's moved" great stuff. Totally addictive.
This evening I noticed I had a baby snail. Not much maybe, but normally the fish will eat the eggs, so another success. And that's before you become fixated on LPS, and feeding them! Watching the Hermit Crabs stampede as they taste food on the bottom of the tank. Shrimp swaying in their hide outs, hanging upside down as though it's normal.
Oh, and you can add fish too.

Fish smish! Yeti gave you an idea. It's incredibly addictive! However, the diversity that you can discover over time in flora and fauna is more rewarding to me than any school of colorful fish.
This is one of my favorite tanks, it is an idea that I would love to pursue but I do not have the time or money to even properly begin at this time.

Sorry if I'm not supposed to post this. I am unsure of this forums rules as far as posting from other forums sites.
