Power Heads

Im looking for a good deal or trade on some power heads.....i have a 125g tank and have been using my nano pumps to have at least a little circulation but still getting alot of dead spots even with my mag 18 on the return line...let me know if ya can help

what do you have currently for powerheads(gph)? I have 1 or 2 750GPH Koralia 2's or 3's forget whichones that I am not using.

Yeah i have the nano koralias i think they're 240 gph each....they worked great on my nano but just too small for my big tank

Not counting your return I would go for at least 20x tank turnover with powerheads. So overall I would shoot for 2,500gph with all of your powerheads. It seems like a lot when you go through that much change but I had 40x turnover in mine and everything loved it.

Thanks Matt that's exactly the number Im shooting for...iv seen a pair of power heads on ebay that do 1300 gph each for $28 but it looks too good to be true....they dont even have a brand name on them....does anybody know of these pumps??

My own experience has been that the powerheads with just suction cups start to come loose after a while. I've now got the Koralia versions which use a magnet to aid the large suction cup, and have never had any problems at all.

LOL, Matt I couldn't go that high as the powerheads were moving my sand all over the place in my shallow tank that's why the larger koralia's are not being used. I am getting about 10x turn over with my nano's (425GPH versions)

You typically want power heads pointed out into the tank and slightly up towards the waters surface. Sometime they are still too powerful and move sand at the bottom anyways... In those cases you'll want to use a higher number of smaller power heads. I'd still try to shoot for 20x turnover calculating power heads alone. A system will run fine for a period of time with less flow, but eventually the detritus buildup in the low flow areas will come back and raise your nitrate and phosphates and bite your butt.

You may be good at 10x turnover with power heads. You'll just have to really have them angled well and get lucky with no dead spots. :-)

Or you could get rid of that nasty sand and crank that flow!

I'm pushing 80x flow in my 75 not counting the return.

Dang for real.....you got a vortex in that baby....i would really love to sit down with you guys and have a few drink to discuss reef tanks......on me...I've been having my reef tank for 2 years so i still consider my self a noob

Dammit Gabe, and I thought I was pushing some water around at 40X flow + filtering, guess that means that I can add another couple of P.H.'s in areas I would like to see more water movement, you know, just a couple of nano's down in the bottom front corners? And maybe a nano or two behind the reef wall pushing water along or through?
By the way John, I'm just over a year old, learnt so much from these guys, they are real enthusiasts in my opinion, they love to help you to learn, and therefore enjoy the addiction.... I mean hobby.

OMG! 80x that would launch my fish and the cats would be happy I am trying/planning to get 3 mp10wep's that way they will cycle and should cover all the areas

I ordered thoese exact powerheads and they work great for flow but like they were saying the suction cups do not hold up but on ebay they have the same powerheads that come with the magnet base and that is going to be what i will order next . there are two that i am looking at.

Damn 3 mp10wep.....i would love to own some eco pumps too but they're just too expensive.....maybe some day when Im rich...and bailey are they selling the whole pump or just the magnet.....i wonder how much magnets runs at the hardware store...

I think I could add more flow. You can't have too much. It's just a matter of placement and how random it is. I had 2 1400 gph powerheads in a 20 gallon but they switched off and on so it wasn't a constant blast. The best way to cheaply add random flow is pointing powerheads towards and perpendicular to each other.
