Looking for Lighting for Coral

Post by Burgess' on Fri 28 Jan 2011, 6:27 pm

I was wondering if anyone could help me in getting some lighting for coral. We've had our tank for over a yr. and don't want to puchase something too expensive due to wanting to upgrade in size of our tank within a yr. Right now I currently have a 55 gallon FOWLR tank and am adding coral very soon. Plan on starting out with soft, easy to care for coral for now. Currently have 2 18" flourescent coralife 50/50 bulbs on now. What would be the next step in lighting???

I would say compact florescent. There are guys on the forum who know much more about it than me so I'll let them chime in as well. Best way to get lighting and not break the bank is to buy used. Watch the for sale section on this forum and craigslist.

If you look for used lighting, or have a little DIY in you, you can do T5 lighting pretty inexpensively as well. The key of course is being patient for the right deal to come up.

I'd skip the compact fluorescents. I had them for a while and it's just not worth spending the money on. I'd look for at least a 4 bulb t5 light, more if you can fit them on a 55.

Personally I've had all above mentioned lights and if you can afford it or DIY, I would definitely go for metal halide. I got my 36" dual 250 watt Orbit fixture on ebay for only $150. Current USA has a sales account and they sell refinished and refurbished halide fixtures for like 1/3 cost. It is a great deal cheaper or here is a good deal
