I have no idea what this is and if its something I need to get control of quickly before it spreads.. I initially thought it was coraline developing since its taken a long time, has a purple/ maroon color and most recently its looks like it has air bubbles stuck in it. Someone please help!

Looks like cyano bacteria to me. What type of sand are you using? Is it silicate based?

It's some east emerald coast Florida sand that a local guy went and picked up.. I have about 3+ inches worth in my display.. I think it might be caused from lack on flow in the middle of my tank.. I've heard cyano can't grow in stronger current

Cyano is caused form carbon dioxide build up in your system it converts it into oxygen. So somewhat true. What filtration are you running? And skimmer if any I would turn it up and get a little bit of a wet skim out of it vs a dry skim for awhile. Resom I asldd about the sand is there is also a bacterial algae that feeds on silicates space no problem there it's a lot harder to get rod of than cyano.

I cycled the same stuff with the same sand. Its cyano, and id just make sure to keep up on the waterchange routine, and maybe point a powerhead at it. It definitaly doesn't like flow. It cycled out pretty quickly for me, but i also did some pretty radical waterchanges when i saw it. Clean water and flow will starve it out in a hurry

In my first attempt at saltwater, i had a 55fowlr, and ignorant me thought t was coraline algae till it started sluffing off n growing across my sand bed... but that tank had no coral at all so i just turned the lights off for a week or so and it died off. I swear it was so thick on the sand that i could roll it up into a filth burrito and remove like a double hand full in one go... i quickly decided i wasn't doing enough waterchanges and leaving my tank lights on 24 hrs a day wasn't helping any either so i got a timer lol. That helped alot

I have a 10 gal sump with carbon, a 5 gal fuge, and an aquatic life internal skimmer 115.. So should I refuse my lighting hours for a couple days as well? I'm worried bc I do have corals and I don't want them to die off from me treating this crud

Get some stiff tubing that will fit into regular airline tubing or a good turkey baster . Use a dedicated toothbrush to gently scrub the cyano off the rocks while siphoning it out of your tank . Turn your pumps off while doing this as you don't want it flying all over the place.

Cutting back on the lighting will help but watch your corals. Keep up the water changes and don't bother trying any of the "miracle cure" additives . Killing the cyano quickly will only add to the problem as it will then rot and pollute the water .

Oh good idea, ill try that tomorrow afternoon with my scheduled water change as well.. When I went to turn the lights on today I noticed that it looks like there are long strands waving in the current.. But the overall area affected has reduced in size.. I'm hoping that this is a sign that it is starting to die off and fall away from the rock

Yeah I think my lights were on too long.. I usually had them on for 10-12 hrs a day.. I guess I'm learning my lesson now
