Tank leaking- start over or reseal? Empty Tank leaking- start over or reseal?

Post by bigeflashgordon Tue 25 Dec 2012, 6:47 pm

So I woke up this morning to find my tank had a small leak in the two side panels.. Merry christmas to me :-/ But not to worry.. It caught it before it got any worse and thankfully didn't loose any livestock after I transferred everything to a spare tank I had.. So the question is, should I start over with a new tank and salvage the parts I have on the tank since its reef ready and put it on a new tank or do I try to reseal this tank I've already gotten?

What size tank? A smaller tank doesn't scare me to do a simple re-seal. A larger one really requires to be taken all the way down to replace the silicone "Between" the panes of glass. This is not only what keeps it from leaking, but also what actually hold the tank together. If you do a simple re-seal, keep an eye on any bubble(s) that forms in the glass-to-glass seal. If it grows.. you'll have problems.

It's a 30 gal tall( 24x12x25). I've never had this problem and I'm kinda weary on how to do it.. I'd like to keep the tank but I also don't wanna stress about it leaking again in the future

Here's the basic method I use. Done this many times without issue.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKactsdPpO8

GE Silicone 1 <<<<<< ****Only**** if using silicone from Wal-Mart/ HomeDepot/ Lowes. Clear Silicone.

If you want Black seams, this is what I get...

http://www.amazon.com/GordonGlass-Black-Aquarium-Silicone-Sealant/dp/B003PNXU1K

Of course you can always buy the little tubes from PetSmart/ Petco, but you don't want to run out in the middle of the job.

Hope this helps.

That does help.. I wonder how difficult it would be to make the tank top rimless or if it is even possible.. Have you had any experience with that?

It's possible. I've pulled off the top frame on an old 2x2 cube tank ok, then broke a 10g tank I just bought << Being in a "Hurry". If you get it off, chances are you will not be able to re-use it. The biggest issue is being able to clean up all the silicone after getting it off. I've never been able to make it look perfect.

I resealed my old 240 with the same ge silicone 1 from lowes, as well as sumps and other stuff fish related. Be sure to get the right one bc they only have like 100 dif kinds of silicone there and ONLY silicone 1 is reef safe

Putting down the silicone is the easy part. The thing to worry about is cleaning the glass really good after removing the old stuff. Be sure to totally remove the old stuff with a razor and wipe the glass down with alchohol to a spotless clean before applying the new silicone.

One 9.8oz tube should be more than enough for that size tank but it never hurts to get extra. I use it all the time!

Can you get the black silicone locally? I can't find it anywhere and lowes says they don't carry it :-/
