So stupid simple... yet eliminates a skimmer?? Im skeptical...
I just see alot of debate about using one or the other but why not both?? We still grow macro with a skimmer... im seriously thinking about trying it. The investment would only be a piece of mesh...

Re: algae turf scrubbers
I'm setting up one in the fuge for my 125g DT.
Will leave the skimmer running in the sump however.
Will be interesting to see how it works. I will post pics of it as the build happens, Right now I'm thinking about how I want to do it. The more I think about it, the more this sounds like a KISS project. (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Need pics Id really like to see what you come up with! Setting up one of these could be as simple as modifying your return line... just glue on a slotted tip to hold the mesh n shine sum light on it?? Or is it really that simple??

Re: algae turf scrubbers
I don't think you want it in the return cause you are needing a steady stream of air (bubbles) cascading over the mesh.

Re: algae turf scrubbers
I want to clarify my last statement.
You could use the return line (or overflow for that matter) to send water falling over the mesh but that would create noise.
By anchoring an airstone in the bottom of your fuge and attaching a mesh screen then lighting it up, you get a highly oxygenated flow for algea growth without the noise.
I will be building this tomorrow as I have gotten all the pieces together. Will post pics of what I've come up with. Will be cheap and easy. Two of my favorite things. (Don't say a word, don't even go there!)

Re: algae turf scrubbers
I think you are going to find the airstone version will not work. Think of it as a large stone in a stream exposed to sunlight and a thin layer of water flowing across the stone. This will produce a slimy algae that in time will form turf algae but if you emerse that same stone a few inches into the water the turf algae will not form only the slim will grow. For a turf scrubber to work properly the screen mesh has to be exposed to air with only a thin stream of water running across its surface, it needs highly oxygenated water. I did a lot of research on scrubbers a couple of years ago and they are promising and it does not take a huge one to be benificial but they need to be built above the water not in it. Be interesting to see both of your results.
