Drilled 90 gal or eshopps pf1200 OB??
Hey guys and gals! I recently traded up my 40 breeder to sparkys 90 gal. I will be making the move this week but since I haven't started yet im debating on having this 90 drilled. I have the eshopps pf1200 but im in the middle of the two. Any suggestions? drilled or overflow box?
P.S sorry sparky I know you are already patiently awaiting your 40 breeder! :p

I bet she will understand. If the tank can be drilled I would do that in a heartbeat! Reef ready is the way to go! Takes away some of the worries of flooding or lost circulation.plus a clean look and no gurgle sound from overflow box. Nice to meet ya the other night btw good luck and if ya got any questions holler

It isn't hard to do. Just gotta make sure it's not tempered glass.

Glass-Holes.com makes a great product. I'm almost certain the bottom of the tank is tempered glass and can not be drilled. However the sides generally are not tempered. There's a youtube video on how to check. Glass-Holes overflows are designed to be installed on the back or side walls.

Jason how many gph on the overflow do you recommend for the 20 gal long sump setup? im going to base my return pump by how much drain im gonna have.

I would choose the 1500gph kit. The next size down is 700gph, might get by with it... but for a few bucks more I'd feel better about the 1500. You won't use it to it's full capacity, but it's there. The 20L sump will be your hold up. Too big of a pump will have your return section run dry before water starts replacing it. I'll take that in consideration when building it. Maximizing the return area. I'd like to see it capable of a Mag 9.5 (950gph). 800-900gph for sure. The "Key" is maintaining enough water in the return section without flooding it when the pump is off.

Re: Drilled 90 gal or eshopps pf1200 OB??
I always wanted to drill that tank, but by the time I upgraded to the 125 I was ready to just pass it along. I did the youtube test on the tank and couldn't tell a difference between the bottom glass and side glass but maybe I was doing it wrong. There is a sticker on the bottom glass that says "Do not drill" so I assume the bottom is tempered. Research "bean-animal overflow" if you wanna drill the back. That's always what I wanted to do. Good luck with the build!

http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx thanks sparky! This is definitely a must read on anyone not familiar with this sort of overflow! It is fail safe so no floods ever! I'm thinking about doing this now. Had you thought of how you were going to build the internal overflow box? Doing the coast to coast style would only consist of two pieces of acrylic or glass siliconed the length of the tank wouldn't it? Sparky you just made me change my mind again lol I'm very interested in beananimals design now

Re: Drilled 90 gal or eshopps pf1200 OB??
By the time I by all the pieces of the plumbing and the material needed to the OB it would probably be as cheap as buying the kit from glass holes anyways. And jason already informed me that he has the hole saws lol
