Red/Brown Algae Empty Red/Brown Algae

Post by cornfedone Mon 24 Jan 2011, 10:55 pm

My 150 gallon tank has been doing great! until two days ago.

It seems as the tank just exploded with this red/brown Algae, Not sure what is going on?
Water levels like Ph, Ammonia, etc. are perfect and Salinity is at 1.026.

there was only 2 changes.

1 I added a 2nd Actinic Light, so to transition into a moon light, 48 in Reef Sun and Actinic light turn off and the other Actinic light comes on, then the moon LEDs after the single Actinic light goes off.

2 Made a mistake and listened to another person, did not do my own research and bought a Sebae Anemone (blue tip), Read some very worrying articles, but read that they can expel their symbiotic Algae, this one is a beautiful White Like fluorescent green. I know now that this is normally tan or brown. But could this be the Algae issue?

Red/Brown Algae Photo11

(weird, image loaded upside down?)

Thanks

Was the anenome a brown/tan color when you purchased and is now white? It was more than likely white when you got it... meaning it had already expelled it's algae.

So this algae likely is coming from something else.

Did you get any phosphate or nitrate readings? Do you have chaeto or another macroalgae anywhere? On the front of the glass I can't tell if that's algae growing on the glass or if it's a hair algae on the sand. Maybe get closer pics of the algae.

Did you have a mini cycle lately? Anything die in the last week or so?

Yes, it was the white like color when we got it, nitrate readings are great, Phosphate? have tests for Ph, Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite.

Have Sand, Rock, and Cheato and Copepods in the Refugium.

The Algae is just like a rust color, not like Hair Algae. My 15% change is due Sat. but going to do it Wednesday.

Had a Blue Damsel die, but was only there maybe 8 hours till i got back from our shop, and pulled it right out. this was 5 days ago.

You might have gone through a mini cycle and have diatoms.

Or its an algae.

I would not feed tomorrow and cut your lights. If it grows with no light, it's likely diatoms.

I would look into source water. Diatoms or the beginning of cyano is what you have. Phosphates are in tap water and fish food and are fuel for the algae. What kind of lighting and filtration do you have, live rock, skimmer, etc? You say you have a 48 inch reef sun light, is that one of the regular t-8 bulbs? If so it is not enough light for an anemone. If your anemone is white it has lost it's zooxanthellae but shouldn't contribute to algae unless it's decaying. Tell us more about your setup.

No, using Stress Coat + for dechlorination of the water. We live rural about 2 hours east of Dallas, not municipal water. I have also double checked myself by taking a water sample in to be tested, results were perfect.

Your water is most likely loaded with phosphates, heavy metals and more which are no good for a reef. I would look into a reverse osmosis system or buying water from a LFS.

Food I am Using: Frozen Krill, Blood Worms, Nutrafin Max Flake, and Kent MicroVert

I am Running a ZooMed 48" Dual T5 one Ultra Sun (Super Daylight) and Coral Sun Actinic (420) , Home Depot fluorescent Fixture with 48" T5 Single Coral Sun Actinic (420), and Blue LED Moon Lights,

The Anemone is doing good, actually starting to get some tanish hue to its tenticles.

That anemone requires high lighting. I would put that thing on top of the tallest thing in your tank for now. I would really try to take it back or sell it quickly. Wet Pets is the only place in town that you can get RO water at the moment... unless you talk it out of a member here. I would do a large water change using RO next chance you get.

If I were you I would buy the first set of used lights that I found and then start saving up for the lighting you want.

Look at tanks people have and decide what kind of lighting you want and then buy.
