Black light just for kicks!
Anyone ever checked out their reef at night with a black light? I had an old black light laying around and I came across it last night and just for kicks, I turned my moon lights off and put that black light over the tank, man it was amazing. I have a red and green war coral in there thanks to ritter and the black light made the red jump out like crazy and I have a red and green large polyp Blasto and it looked like something from outer space. I wouldn't go buy one but if you have a black light bulb, check it out its crazy.

I have never tried it myself but I love the article titled Aquariums All Aglitter in the 2009, Volume 11, issue of Marine Fish & Reef. It explains the reason your corals fluoresce. The pictures are simply amazing!
To get a photo of the corals you have to purchase a special filter for your camera.

The article calls it a barrier filter but does not say exactly what that is. It only says that is is yellow and is designed to remove the excess blue light.

Re: Black light just for kicks!
Well.... After reading about the yellow lens I got a little curious. I went down and got my yellow glasses, for riding my motorcycle at night, and took a look with my blue led moon lights on. WOW!! That is awesome!! Get you some yellow glasses and take another look Donnie.....
I took a couple of pics through the lens with my iPhone. If you have a good camera and either yellow shooting or riding glasses you should be able to snap some good pics.

Re: Black light just for kicks!
If there is a single yellow filter lens in this city that fits my camera I will hunt that thing DOWN! lol.
I'll try to get all of these settings down just perfect and then ride around and take pictures of a bunch of ya'lls tanks if you would like that.

Played with this one a bit to make it look like what you see through the glasses.

I'm curious about the setting you're using on your camera and if/how you are doctoring in photoshop. Can you PM me some details? Or maybe just post them here if others are interested.

Gotcha. I forgot about the yellow riding glasses. That's probably a key component. Hmmmmm....something else for me to look in to.

Do a search on ebay for yellow camera lens and you will find lots of yellow lens filters pretty cheap. Any would work as long as they are as wide as your lens. Here is a nice one, only problem is its in China, takes about three weeks to get it. I got a bid in on a 58 mm for $.98 plus couple a bucks shipping, if you see that one don't outbid me just look further down and there are more just like it, several listed.

Re: Black light just for kicks!
Try to get a #15 or higher.
The higher number the more it will filter and the better the pictures will look.
A #8 is only rated for blue's similar to a blue sky. #15 is the first mention of a filter for marine photography... let alone blue LED marine photography! lol.
Also Bill, play around with those bars up top some. Try moving the middle bar to the highest peak on the color that you want to accent most.
