Re: banned from petland

I really don't say much if anything to people in stores buying stuff you know they can't keep. Sometimes people will strike up a conversation with me about saltwater tanks and then after a few minutes I can tell they have no idea what I'm talking about even though I try to explain things pretty basic. I don't even say anything to owners or employees that try to feed me BS. Jim at exotic fish spent about 10 minutes following me and my wife around one day trying to sell me a carnation coral for $120, which is near impossible to keep in any tank. He was going on and on about how easy this coral was to grow under my lighting and it was so easy to frag and how fast the coral grows, blah, blah, blah. I just ignored him best I could and went about my business. I did find out what kind of salesman he really is though.

Lets face it! If you are gonna buy anything from a LFS you need to do some research. I was in a LFS the other day and this lady was talking about the problems with her tank. I listened to the sales person go on and on about the problem and they were completely wrong! I later pulled the person aside and took them to the product that would help. Now does that mean it solved all the problems NO! but it was the right direction to go. So that being said you should never try and interupt the sales person or get into their biz but if you have the knowledge and the chance to pull that customer away for a bit help them out!

The owner of the LFS is in a lose/lose situation. If they try to inform people of the proper needs for the livestock or that they can't keep something alive then they will insist on buying it anyway or taking their business somewhere else. If they don't inform the person of the needs of the livestock and they get it home and it dies then they blame the crappy store because everything they buy from them dies. The repeat customers that will support a store are the ones that do their own research and buy livestock that they know they can support.
