Dont you hate it when you cant find what your looking for!?!

In a dream world if a new store opened in your area what would you want to see that you can find anywhere? know someone that is thinking about opening a store and wants to be known for being that guy were you can get what you cant find anywhere else. Livestock and supply, as well as quality and honesty. Just curious to see what people will say.

General Aquatics store requests Empty Re: General Aquatics store requests

Integrity. I live in Tyler and my opinion of the 2 current stores is low, the other that no longer exists, well less said the better.
Second would have been knowledge through experience, but, I have found it here!!
Never the less, if they were to be selling cichlids I would much rather be able to tell them what I have in my tank, and them be able to warn me that the never seen before "Blue Green Rhino Nosed Double Finned Malawi Cichlid" is a rampant ravager of Yellow Labs, rather than me having to come home read up on it, then drive back ... to find it's been sold. To which I would suggest that they have a computer available on line, so someone can actually read up on that tempting morsel.
(A) It free's up the owners time to deal with customer
(B) It allows the customer to read at leisure, and, in the end it is then their decision wether it will fit in or not.
(C) There is no better way of the owner proving his knowledge and experience than telling the customer the facts, and then saying "Here, look it up on line" and the customer finding exactly the same as told. That builds confidences.

After that quality, much prefer quality over quantity of selection.
Back in the UK, when I was a teenager there was a professional fish photographer that also ran as a side line a LFS. It was about 20 miles away (which in the UK is regarded as a long drive to buy anything), but my father would take me there, although it was a small operation, he knew his fish, and he kept good tanks and healthy fish. He was only open at the weekends, but I don't recall ever going there and there not being a few cars.

Also, what about getting folks email addy's? (By now you may start to realise I work in retail). With customers email addy he would be able to send out a list of what was coming in, on which day. What better way of whetting your customer appetite?

I also have other ideas, but I will step down off the display cabinet and let someone else have their say.

Other than that, dancing girls, hot towels, free drinks etc are always acceptable?

All good ideas some of which already have plans to be implemented.......These two are new to me though and both great ideas! The first I think I can pull...The second I will have to work on.

General Aquatics store requests Empty Re: General Aquatics store requests

Post by etexer Mon 14 Feb 2011, 2:01 am

Heres the deal......I was offered an Executive Aquatics Marketing position for a national pet store chain. My first task would be to set up and have running an aquatics department in the Dallas store. This would have to be done by the set date of the grand opening April 1st. If this is a success then we would be moving on from our 90 day contract to a 1, 3, or 5 year contract. He suggested that partial reimbursement be a turn key franchise in Tyler. This as of yet is all in the works but any views on this topic would greatly help my in the planning for the Dallas store then move on to the Tyler store. Either way I do hope to one day move my operation out of my house one day and to a store front.

+1 to this, and I would add a few things.

1.) From the saltwater side, one thing that is becoming increasingly important to me is responsible reefkeeping/collection, etc. I think it's important that we all be responsible in where we are acquiring our tank inhabitants from. Every fish/coral/invert that is taken from the reefs has a negative impact on the life of that reef. I'm not trying to be all "green" but I think it's important for the longevity of this hobby to be responsible with our tanks and that means stores being responsible about where their stock comes from too. Is it possible for a retail store to have ALL tank raised specimens? Sure, but in the grand scheme of things it's not really practical for anything other than a very specialized store, and not something that I personally think could be supported from only local customers.

2.) Ability to "special order" if there is something specific that you are looking for. I know that availability from suppliers would control this, but to have the ability to pickup a particular fish or coral when it was available without having to pay overnight shipping is a bonus. I haven't ordered anything online yet. I know plenty of others have, but there is something about seeing what you're getting that really appeals to me.

3.) Another big thing for me is knowledgeable staff. Staff and ownership that is willing to forgo a quick buck, to build a long-term customer. In other words, you wouldn't see some of the things we've seen discussed on these forums in recent days about carrying a new tank setup and fish to go in it out on the same day. I'm not even gonna step up on my soapbox about this one. I do like what Yeti said about the online research tool in the store. Very cool idea.

4.) Location, Location, Location. Obviously the distance to drive factors into the overall cost of livestock. Driving to Dallas or Shreveport isn't really that big of deal, but certainly factors into the overall cost and ultimately the decision to purchase.

5.) Obviously price. If I can order say, a dry good online, pay the $6 or $7 in shipping, and still get it for markedly less than picking it up in a local store, the only thing I have by ordering online is the few days wait. Emphasis on "markedly less". I'm all for supporting the local lfs, but I just can't justify paying 20, 30, 40% more for things on a continual basis. I might pick it up on the emergency basis, but wouldn't be that willing to do it on a regular basis.

One final thought. I think local clubs and hobbyists can be either a store's biggest asset or worst enemy. I'm not saying that the lfs has to offer discounts, special sales, etc. all the time or anything like that, but I do think that it is important for a store to support these local groups for two reasons. One, it gets people "hooked up" with other folks who share the passion for the hobby and adds an additional resource for research to avoid issues like are discussed in #3 above. Certainly for me, the interaction with people like Daniel, Gabe, Jason, and others only makes me want to purchase more livestock when I see their tanks or read their posts. Two, it provides a place where others on the forums can safely send "newbies" to and know that they will be treated well and not just sold whatever the store can get into the customer's hand. Obviously both of these items are good for the store, but they're also good for the hobby in general in my opinion.

I was only gonna add my .02, but I think that's probably a bit more than that. Sorry for the long post, but I hope that helps.
