Holding question Empty Holding question

Post by Shank Wed 09 Mar 2011, 1:47 am

The Yellow labs are living up to there name, less than two weeks back in the community tank and the female is holding again. Seeing as the male is over an inch larger than her she's getting picked on quite a bit. My question is this, seeing as the female isn't eating anyway, would there be any risk of her eating the fry currently in the tank or am I over reacting to the situation? At this time the plan is to leave her in the community tank for another 2 or so weeks, but placing her in the nursery for that time popped in my head as a solution to keep her from getting too stressed. Either way, I'll strip her at this point and place her back in the community tank while keeping the new fry penned in for a couple weeks in the nursery until they're big enough to fend for themselves... Btw anyone interested in some labs?

If she is getting really beat up it would be a good idea to put some extra shelter in there for her. She probably wouldn't bother the fry in the growout, but there is always a risk. I'd keep her in the main tank until you are ready to strip. Just put a piece of pvc in one of the upper back corners of the tank. A suction cup will hold it at the top or you can use duct tape on the pvc and over the rim of the tank(I've had to do that before). Make sure the pipe, or fitting is large enough for her to hide in. Etexer will usually buy fry if the price is right. He won't make a trip to Plano just for that though.

I like the pvc tube idea, might add a few to the tank in the near future. I stripped her tonight, still have to finalize the count but anywhere from 36 to 39 newbies.... female may have one or two left in her mouth but she did try to eat something after i put her back in the tank. I will say, despite seeming more stressful this time around, keeping her in the community tank and only tanking her out to strip seemed to be less taxing her than isolating her in the nursery for a week ahead of time and then moving her back to the big tank a couple weeks later...

I would love to take a couple of your Labs, just basically because I have heard so much about their breeding, of course prior to accepting any fish from you I would require a notorized (how the hell do you spell that?) deed confirming that they had been neutered, no Sunshine Lab Verginalis in my tank thank you. Oh...but think of the colour...Oh but think how Stick would be wanting to come and feed them to my cats! j/k Stick.

No lie, and I would never do this because I really think it's f-d but I have a dark sense of humor, but I've thought about using fry as treats to train my cat's into adorable feline murder machines.... you know, to bring about the apocalypse? Seriously guys, kitties helter-skeltering like nobody's business....

I would be interested in the fry if you want to bring them and sell them or trade them for something.

I'm relatively certain the female's got a couple more up her sleeve... on top of this i just witnesses two of my acei get it on, not sure how successful it was though, seemed like every other fish in the tank was C-Blocking the poor guy, especially once the other Acei males found out what was going on...

LOL sounds like he needs some privacy. It can be difficult if the fish isn't dominate enough to drive off the other males. At least you know that one of the females is ready . . . maybe a more dominate acei will hit that. Wink
