Faded Ricordea
I was needing some help on my ricordea mushroom. I've had it for about 3 weeks and it's setting in the sandbed now it's colors are kind of faded looking. I was wondering if it needs to be moved up higher in the tank or if it needs less light. It's fully expanded. I've got T5's 10K day and actinic. I had it kinda moved into less light a couple of times but it got moved back out into the light.

Do you happen to have pics. How many watts of T5 are you running and how deep is your tank? Check your waters ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, pH and alk. How does everything else in the tank look?

I moved it today about 3 inches over and seems to be doing better. May have had a little too much flow on it. It expanded even more too.

Re: Faded Ricordea
they do not tolerate high flow very well, so put it in a moderate flow area and leave it for a few days and see if it gets any better

Re: Faded Ricordea
What color is it ? Is it a floridae or yuma ?
The brighter colors of floridae ( orange , etc. ) seem to do better in higher light levels than the darker blues and greens.
The centerpiece of my 20 is a 10 lb. (?) rock covered with orange floridae. They've gotten paler and smaller over the last year so I'm wondering if it's more of a crowding issue.

It's a Florida green and purple, it's still not as bright as I think it should be though

Care And Placement For Ricordeas
Ricordeas Are an extremely hardy soft coral found in the Florida waters off the coast of Florida. They are typically found at depths of up to 50 feet in slightly higher nutrient waters than that of an Acropora dominate reef. In the aquarium, ricordeas thrive in less light intense conditions with slightly nutrient rich water. VHO and power compact lighting provide perfect lighting. Metal halides can also be used to light ricordeas if they are kept under overhangs and at the bottom of the tank. Ricordeas also like lower water flow, where they can strech out thier tentacles and feed off zooplankton slowly drifting by. Running heavy protien skimming, carbon, phosphate absorbing material and heavy macro-algae, can strip the water of nutrients. Periodic feeding of meaty foods will be appreciated under these conditions where acropora dominant tanks are kept along with ricordeas.

Re: Faded Ricordea
A picture would be great to help solve the problem. Just a guess here but you say you have a 10k and actinic t-5, is that only 2 bulbs or are there more? How deep is the tank? Expanding is not always good with soft corals, it may be reaching for light. Faded, expanded shrooms usually mean not enough light. If they are getting too much light they will shrivel up but be more colorful but they can adapt to almost any light. JMO I would move it up as high as you can and see what happens with the color and expansion. Especially if you only have 2 bulbs.

Re: Faded Ricordea
Yeah my camera doesn't take clear pictures of the coral up close. I've try to take some but it's very blurry. Yeah those are the only 2 bulbs I have b/c I have the skimmer hanging on the back, so 2 bulbs are all that will fit. This is our starter tank when we upgrade we'll build a refugium. (built our own stand and have it supported well, but no room for a refugium). It's a 55 gallon tank 18 inches deep, with about inch depth of sand. When I go to research coral there's so many different websites saying different information. The rest of the corals are doing well. We do frequent water changes. I didn't want to move the mushroom too much b/c I wanted to give it time to adjust and see how it does. This is a learning experience for us and any help is greatly appreciated.
