Beware of the Whelk
I noticed lately that my snails were slowly disappearing but always thought it was probably the crabs looking for shells. Recently, I installed led moonlights on the aquarium so I could still enjoy my aquarium late at night. The first night after the installation, I found some unusual critters scurrying around the tank. To my surprise, there were a few unusual looking snails that seemed to like the other snails an awful lot. After further research, I found out that they where Whelks! Yikes - 5 of them in my tank! They just love to eat other snails! They were not just being friendly with the other snails. That was their dinner!
Some facts:
* Whelks are often misidentified as Nassarius Snails and shipped as Nassarius Snails.
* Whelks, with the exception of one group - the Nassariids, should not be welcomed in reef aquariums.
* If you have ever purchased Nassarius snails, get out your flashlight and take a look at night. They
only come out at night to feed on your other snails that you have been paying good money for.
* Whelks do not stay in the sand bed like a Nassarius.
* Whelks love CLAMS so be extremely careful when buying Nassarius Snails.

No. I found that pic on another forum. Somebody caught one of those little buggers in the act. They actually have some nasty teeth on the end of that little snout.

Re: Beware of the Whelk
I collected a bunch of huge whelks for mantis food in Galveston. They were actually eating each other in the holding tank. I was giving the bigger ones large chunks of table shrimp and they where swallowing them whole. Pretty crazy to watch. I posted a thread on RC asking exactly what they were and someone said they were not whelks but Florida Rock Snails, still looked like whelks to me and were carnivores just the same.

I wish I would have know puffers eat them. My mantis didn't much care for the larger ones so I took the rest to Wet Pets. Here's what my peacock thinks about whelks,
