Have any of ya'll ever enriched food before? I'm looking at giving some extra nutrition to the mandarin I picked up who is eating frozen.

I'm looking at Self Emulsified Lipid Concentrate (SELCO) but don't know where to pick it up and if there are alternatives.

Enriching Food Empty Re: Enriching Food

Matt-

You know I'm still relatively a newbie to the saltwater side of things, but for what it's worth....good friend of mine from another forum (LONG time reef keeper and actually works for a lfs) recommended Kent Marine's Zoecon to me as a really good supplement to existing feeding regiment no matter what it is.

Here's their product description:
Description:Diets deficient in omega-3 fatty acids can promote head and lateral line erosion (HLLE) syndrome in freshwater and marine fishes. Zoecon provides essential marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Enriches foods for saltwater and freshwater fishes. Contains shark liver oil, which contains natural immune system stimulants. Useful in raising fish and invertebrate larvae, as well as fortifying live food for juvenile and adult fishes and invertebrates. Phosphate and nitrate free, and contains no yeast or sugars!

Directions:Shake well before using. To use as a food soak, in a small container add 1 drop (0.5 ml) Zoecon and 4 drops (2 ml) Zoe to dry or frozen food, and soak for 5-10 minutes. Then add the contents of the container to the aquarium. When raising brine shrimp and other live aquatic foods, add 2 drops (1 ml) Zoecon and 8 drops (4 ml) Zoe per liter water to the rearing container, and allow 12-16 hours for maximum nutritional enrichment. To benefit invertebrates, Zoecon can also be added directly to an aquarium at the dosage of 1 drop per 50 gallons water daily.

Considerations for use:Kent Zoecon is a properly preserved food enrichment product designed to provide freshwater and saltwater fishes with essential marine lipids and the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Zoecon will benefit fishes that have a diet deficient in lipids, and in which signs of head and lateral line erosion are present (pitting of the skin in the facial region and lateral line). Using Zoecon as a food soak and fortifier of live foods increases the portion of lipids and highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA?s) in the fish?s diet. Also, the addition of deepwater shark liver oil containing alcoxyglycerols enhances fishes? immune systems, and is useful in treating fish with injuries caused by rough handling and fighting with other aquarium inhabitants. Regular use of Zoecon can help prevent nutritional imbalances in fishes and invertebrates (both passive filter-feeders and active foragers)

Don't know if that helps you at all...but thought I'd share.

I've used Selcon for FW/SW fish and corals and have been pleased with the results. Turn your skimmer off for a while if adding it directly to the tank so it'll have time to soak in instead of bubblin' away. Wink

Garlic-Guard ( I think?) is another I'll recommend. Garlic seems to stimulate feeding behavior in fish (ask our resident catfisherman). Short of an in depth scientific analysis though , I'll testify to its stress/blood-pressure/high blood glucose reducing properties.

Hey, it helps the dogs and I . Certainly won't harm the fish (in appropriate amounts). lol!

I've heard of the garlic as an eating stimulant as well and seen the Selcon mentioned on other forums. Unfortunately, I've looked in the all three stores in Longview and haven't been able to find the zoecon.

Shortly after this convo I added garlic to my fish food... I gotta say... I've never seen my fish go after food so hard... and my corals responded too. My frogspawn got MUCH larger than it usually does at feeding time. It's been a few weeks now... and the response seems less noticeable than it was when I started. So I don't know if my fish got used to it, or if I got used to the reaction from my fish and corals. lol

Why didn't you ask? I use Selcon weekly. I can give you some if you'd like to try it. I'm working through the weekend.

I still have over half bottle.. it will last another couple of months. Not something you'll feed everyday... and it goes a long way... offer still stands if you want some Smile
