Skimmer Recommendation Empty Skimmer Recommendation

Post by reileywatts Sun 23 Jan 2011, 12:43 pm

I am basically starting over with a new saltwater tank. I've had a 120 Gal DAS setup for about 4 yrs but just recently moved to Flint and lost all my livestock in the move. So I'm selling the 120 gal DAS and starting over with a 92 Gal corner bowfront. I want to do reef, anyone have any suggestions on what the best protein skimmer would be to get(that won't break the bank)? I'm leaning towards the AquaC Remora.

I personnally like the ASM skimmers. Mine does a great job on my 120. I also have an Octopus SWC rated at 400 gallons that I want to plumb in after I move to the new place. But the ASM'a are fabulous in my opinion.

I also failed to mention that I don't have the room for a sump of refugium. With the DAS tank, the protein skimmer was built into the overflow box inside the tank, worked great.

I have a Pro Clear Aquatic Systems MPS 150 on my tank and I am happy with it. It's $250-300 brand new.

Do you think I could get away with a skimmer that is rated up to 75 gal? It will go into a 92 gal tank, I have about 120lbs of live rock that will go into the tank as well. Probably a dumb question.

You have to figure that your actual volume of water is a lot less than the size of the tank. There used to be a calculator on line to figure out how many gallons of water you actually have after live rock is placed in the tank. Maybe someone that has better googling skills than I could find it.

You would probably be real close but I recommend spending the extra $$ on the skimmer. It's one of the most important pieces of equipment you will buy. For example, I plan to purchase a 72gallon tank but I will be a skimmer rated for 150gallon.
