Had a customer call up wanting a bulkhead, he had looked for two days in the area before he found us. Was glad that we could get his tank up and running without having him going to Dallas.

What would you like to see available in Tyler that you can't get locally?

I'd like to see a saltwater selection you'll find in Dallas. Honestly, even Tyler is a drive I don't like to make. How about moving to Longview?

I was excited when Exoctic Fish first opened up (first location), had lots of great displays. Live stock, corals ect.. I would make a special trip just to visit. Always spent some money. After the move.. fish seemed to be priced too high. Like WetPets here in Longview, the selection went down. Fish always looking half dead or dying. And priced way out of line. $50 for a horrible looking Yellow Tang? I'd take my chances online. At least I'll have a 14-15 day garrentee. I still buy at Petco though. They have issues like the others, but not near as often or as bad. Still find dead fish in thier tanks too, but atleast the prices are generally good. Plus Jennifer, Amy and even Phillip will try to treat you well. If you decide to have a "Store Front", I hope you can do it well. If you do.. you will have great customers.

Sorry for the "Soap Box" speach, I just wish I could open up one myself. Just to have one done right!

Im excited to hear the feedback. We are bringing online a few more sections of our fish room this week- hopefully we will have our 600 gallon section up and running this weekend. That will allow us to stock more fish and coral in our showroom.

At the moment we can order anything you would like- fish coral equipment custom aquariums etc. we are looking to have a stocking of fish, coral, inverts and equipment here in the next few months.

If you want to open a Longview location, let me know. Most people don't realize the Longview population has eclipsed that of Tylers.... just sayin' Smile

There is no doubt in my mind that Longview could support a saltwater maintenance and coral shop... after a customer base was built up it could support a great store front.

I'd hit up a good fish shop in Tyler when I made the trip, but it wouldn't be my primary place for sure. I've got a box that was delivered to my front door sitting in my living room right now, and gas+time is more than shipping.

That's the guy who originally owned exotic fish started that business. I believe he is out of business again.

Whats missing? Empty Re: Whats missing?

Post by Yeti Thu 28 Apr 2011, 3:51 am

As a teenager in the UK there was one guy that made his living by being a professional fish photographer, but had an extension to his house which housed several tanks, from which he sold fish, but only at the weekend.
The fish he had were excellent, and we travelled to go there...ok my father drove me there, I was about 13.
To get to the point, if you hold good fish, even with limited hours I believe the "fish addicts" would then come. Jim-Bob & Tanya May Lou will always just buy their fish at the nearest place, and accept the dross provided, and the subsequent mortality rate... "they were cheap" (yeah bubba, but that was a live fish lost).
But if you can have a retail operation running as a side line to a distribution business, and I'm guessing you are looking to set up some type of distribution business to retailers, then the costs are minimal. Offer good product (key to any business that wishes to grow, as you know), have knowledgable staff, preferably with time to discuss the enthusiast tank and wishes (remember you are selling the dream tank inhabitants, but be honest about what will work, a happy buyer tells 100 people, an unhappy buyer tells 1,000 people).
Offer buy back/exchange! I lived in Odessa, the fish place there was out of the way, but had knowledge, selection, quality but also did buy back/exchange. I bought an Oscar, it grew, and grew....and grew. I was there one day and said about this, they said "bring it back, we'll exchange it for $X value of fish" I took him back, I selected 3 Cichlids, they said "pick another" WOW! did I feel special, I then set up a cichlid tank, and bought more Cichlids, off them of course. And they sold a nicely developed 10" Oscar for however much.
Finally, the internet.
My own view.
1) If you can delegate someone to the task, then have them update your stock selection several times a week. If I look at a site and the last update was 3 weeks ago/ 3 months ago, forget it, I close the page/return to my google search.
2) If you are doing deliveries to retailer then why not look at a new way of doing this. Most Internet sellers have a minimum $75 - 125 - whatever order, which puts off the "overstocked tank/set up tank wanting another fish/es"
What about a timed collection from a certain place?
Stay with me, it's different as an idea, but maybe it would work.
I'll use Tyler, as I know it.
Orders under say $50. We deliver to Tyler on a Wednesday. Our delivery van will be parked at the south west corner of the Broadway Mall car park by the steps down to Bealls between 4.30 & 5.00PM. Buyer selecting to collect must be there during this time or fish will be returned to the store. If you contact us within 48 hours, we will deliver the fish the following week at the same time to the same location. Any buyer that doesn't collect the fish at the second occasion has been deemed to have declined, and will be charged a fee of a minimum of $10 or 25%, which ever is the lesser, at this stage. The balance will be refunded to the buyers credit card.
........Just a thought....then again, thinking outside the box.... I love it.

I would just like less bull. I hate to hear people that work at, or even own, a place that give people bad advice or lie just to make a sale. If something is difficult to keep tell the customer it's difficult to keep and they will probably buy it anyway. When I go into a place and they begin to push a impossible to keep coral or fish on me it turns me off from buying anything at all.

Some good input- Are there any supplies that you guys would like to see locally?

A specific type of salt? or a line of skimmers?

Reef salt would be good. Petsmart in Tyler just stop carrying it from what I hear all they have now is marine. Was glad to see the progress you have made when we came by the other day. Glad you finally got those systems moved back. I dont know how you did that lol. Guys Jeff and his wife are great people and their fish and service good quality I have seen first hand. Would recommend them to anyone. Cant wait to see all the systems up and running.
