Powerheads for Cichlids? Empty Powerheads for Cichlids?

Post by Yeti Tue 17 May 2011, 12:46 am

I was scrolling through eBay as one does at times and saw all these powerheads and wondered if they hold any value for a Cichlid tank. I have a Magnum 350 with Tetra 30-60 on one tank, and an Eheim 2217 plus a Cascade Feeble Canister on the other. Both have airstones in what may be the stiller corner of each tank, just to create additional water movement. So I was wondering if they would add anything?

Oh and I got my Sailfin for the "Hap/Peacock" tank, I like him, but not as much as the 2 Clown Loaches though. I know S. American and African water is different but so far these 2 seem to be happy and keeping good colour and activity levels.

Powerheads for Cichlids? Empty Re: Powerheads for Cichlids?

I use and have used powerheads in cichlid tanks. They can be beneficial. If you have sand they may prove more useful than if you have gravel. One of the best uses for them is to create water movement at the bottom of rock formations to prevent waste from gathering and working it's way under the rock. Additionally I have found that if you place them low enough in the tank cichlids enjoy swimming in the current.

Just out of curiosity, what "sailfin" are you referring to?

I meant Featherfin, as in synodontis.

Interesting what you say about the powerhead, the Happy tank is sand, and infact I was thinking with sand it would be bad low down as it could lift sand that would be taken into the filter. I may now succumb and get one, probably online, as the LFS have weak and feeble models in tyler.

Powerheads for Cichlids? Empty Re: Powerheads for Cichlids?

One thing you can do to help prevent sand intake low in the tank is to put it in upside down with the intake pointed toward the top of the tank. Additionally you can/should use a pre-filter sponge over the intake. If you end up getting a model that doesn't offer a pre-filter you can make one out of an aquaclear sponge filter insert. Just cut it to size then cut an "X" in the center where you will insert the powerhead intake. It is easy to cut with a serrated steak knife.

I know that you can get a "reverse flow" kit for penguin powerheads. I have one and like it. The pre-filter is rather large on those, but adds the benefit of additional mech/bio filtration. I know that there are others that have optional pre-filters, but the names elude me at the moment. If you end up going to see James, I think he has a box of used powerheads at good prices. Could be worth the trip to Van.
