Random filter floss issue Empty Random filter floss issue

Post by matt_longview Fri 13 May 2011, 4:05 pm

I've been having this problem for a bit and I just figured out what is causing it! My flow through my media reactor would slow down causing my water in the filtering area of my tank to drop. Well I finally figured out what causes it. The air bubbles produced by my chaeto can't escape because they stop at my filter floss. This air trying to work its way up slows down the flow of water that is trying to get down. Usually isn't a problem, I simply notice because my water level is lower than I keep it at and I move the floss around to let out the air bubbles and it raises back up.

However, I'll be hooking up an ato soon. So....... it will keep running if the water stays low because of slower flow.

Alright... any ideas at all?

Bubbles build up below the filter pad and restrict the water flow. How do I keep bubbles from building up under there? Should my filter pad be completely under the water or not?

Maybe if u angled it the bubbles would flow to one side allowing more floss area for waterflow?

I actually considered the same thing. That would require me to do a pretty good amount of work to my media rack.... which is no fun! lol.

It slows the flow down enough that it drops the water in my fuge section, which causes my ATO to kick on and put freshwater in even though there's no evaporation... so I have my ATO shut off while I'm trying to figure this out.

Matt
I know your media rack is modeled after mine and I have no problem with air bubbles however I do know that if I put to much floss or pack the floss in that my flow slows a little. If you are using loose filter floss start using a lot less, I use a little and change it at least once a week. If the floss starts getting dirty it slows the flow. I don't think the air is comming from the Chaeto but rather from the turbulent fall over the overflow just like air is forced into the water below a floodgate system on a lake. I think the answer to your problem will be less floss and not packed, just place it in loosely about a half inch thick, try it and see.

I use filter pads. Maybe I'll switch back to floss and use less. I switched to see if it would help with this issue. :-)

So I tried to just randomly cut the filter pad too wide, then angle it... appears to have worked perfectly.

In the future... I'll make sure my mechanical filtration is kept higher... out of the water.
