here lately ive been thinking of making my 30 gal a eel setup but i dont really know to much about eels. so if anyone could give me some kind of direction i would greatly apreciate it.

not sure what kinf of clean up crew i could put in te tank or what fish would be safe with the eel. im thinking of a pvc (cave system) to place under the sand bed along with a nice live rock sculpture with plenty of hideing spots but theres limeted room in a 30 gal tank lol.

idk if i need heavy water flow or if i need a wave box
but i will be running a hang on bio wheel filter, skimmer

thx steven

I probably wouldn't run a bunch of pvc pipes under the sand . They'll collect detrius and it'll be a major pain to clean.

You're going to need a tight cover over the tank since eels are escape artists. Not sure how you'd do that with a bio-wheel.

I don't think I'd start with a ribbon eel . Maybe a small snowflake ( prepare to get a bigger tank) and work your way up.

A Ribbon Eel gets to be around 4 - 5 ft long as and adult, IF you can keep it alive that long. A 30g tank is NO WHERE near big enough to keep one, even a small one. Also the tank needs to be sealed tightly to prevent escape. When I had my green moray it was constantly trying to open the top of the tank. Eels are waste factories too, a HOB biowheel POS filter isnt going to cut it with this one, nor will the hang on skimmer (if you are only willing to go 30g and have a biowheel filter, we all know you didnt spend money on a good skimmer) Ribbons are very picky eaters as well, getting one to eat in captivity before it starves is very hard to do. You dont see many of them for a reason, They are better left in the ocean - not in aquariums. If you do try it, buy the right equipment and a bigger (~75g) tank, also no need for a wave box but at least have enough flow to keep the waste from settling . Eels also have a very hard time seeing, you pretty much have to hand the food to them (you dont dump in mysis and go) a feeding stick will come in very handy.

Please do us all a favor and forget this idea, you openly admit you do not know much about eels. I would hate to see you kill 3-4 of these before you get the hint that they are one of the hardest ones to keep.

Bryan's a bit more direct than I Laughing but I do agree with him, Steven. Ribbons are notorious for starving to death in home aquaria.
Don't get ticked off when somebody tells you what you don't want to hear. I killed a lot of fish and corals by not listening to folks with more experience. Embarassed Keep reading on the subject and I'm sure it won't be long before you're an expert . Wink

Sorry if I came off as an A-hole, I was having a very bad day and thats where it all came out I guess.

Anyway, the ribbon eel isnt one that you should start out with. They are one of the hardest creatures to keep in an aquarium. In a tank that small, it will be hard to find an eel that will be happy long term. Look into garden eels if you can get a deeper tank, they like to burrow in deep sand and they stay quite small when compaired to other types of eel. They are also tougher to keep than the normal eel, but are very fun to watch if you can provide the proper care. A snowflake would be the best for a beginner eel, but keep an eye on them if placed with smaller fish because they will eat small fish.

I agree that a snowflake would be best to start out with. I have one thats about 18+ inches in my aggresive tank I am putting together. He is alot more active, swimming all over the tank, than I thought he would. As far as escape artists, I have a pretty good system (top) in place and can provide some suggestions if you decide you want to keep one.

Lol. Good call on not putting it in the 90g! I can just imagine it now. "I've taken the top off of my tank and placed buckets all around hoping the eel jumps out, it's killing everything!" lol.
