I was sitting here in the middle of the storm and was thinking. Has anyone ever considered or actually used rainwater for their reef tank? Any ideas on this?

I had the same thought a while back and after some reading some said that it could be used but it would have to be filtered heavily with carbon before use. It picks up a lot of stuff on the way down from the sky that you don't want in the tank. I would like to do some testing on rain water one day for TDS and see what's all in it. I think if it would be hard to collect enough clean rain without using some type of gutter or collector that would make the water worse. If I had a hand held TDS meter I would sure check it out though.

I have a hand held TDS meter and I checked from the storm today. I placed a plastic container in the rain and after the storm I checked and it was 010 ppm on the meter, not bad but not RO either. By the way, I got 3/4" rain today to go with the 1" yesterday, now if I could just get some n my fishin hole I might be able to go fishin' again, my fishin' spot is growing grass right now:>(

Don't even think about using run off from a shingled roof for anything but watering flowers . You might be ok with water caught in an open field but test the devil out of it first. We have a major coal mining / burning operation up here so I use the rainwater that I capture solely for ornamental plants.
I know, it falls on the garden as well but I can't put a tarp over the whole plot.
Donnie : I've been thinking about a 3/4 acre perch pond. What dollar amount am I looking at ( say, 10 ' deep , max) ?

Don't know about that I wasn't into that type construction but if you are serious I can put you onto the best pond builder in east Texas, I worked with him for years, he did all our dirtwork. If you want his name and number just shoot me a PM and I will get it to ya.
