Has anyone ever heard that you should not use garden hoses to do water changes? I have heard that they leech out harmful chemicals. Any thoughts/

I know there's some metal in the hose but it's covered so I guess if it's exposed it could be harmful.

I have heard something of the sort , but I think the problem comes from using the same hose that you use for everything lawn realted. If you were to have a dedicated hose and made the effort to replace the metal ends with the plastic ones , i dont see an issue. I do use a dedicated hose, but it is for draining purposes only, I have PVC plumbed to send water back to the tank.

You ever notice the odd flavor when you drink from a garden hose??? Same thing!!! It is the synthetic rubber leaching. I still use it for filling a new tank...and for drinking out of on occasion!

I always use the wife's 1 gallon pitchers for water changes. Leave one filling, then carry the other. Then again, I only do changes on my 55G at about 10-15 gallons at a time and only every 2-3 months!

I have removed the ends and use the hose just to drain right now. I was worried about the rubber leeching as I was putting the water back in. I think I will get some new hose for the return. Just in case.

I use buckets still. Syphon out whilst either digging in the gravel, or fanning the sand, depending on the substrate. Then the water currently is going onto the Melons & Cantalopes .
We use 3-4 dedicated "Fish buckets". Me syphoning whilst my G/f is filling and de-chlorinating. 25g of water, over 5 tanks, along with filter media being washed/replaced is changed in under an hour I guess.

I am setting up a 55 gallon polymer drum with premixed water to do water changes with a ball valve on it to do water changes. I will probably just play it safe and get some new tubing. Think that would be the smarter way to go.
