Redesigning my media rack Empty Redesigning my media rack

Those of you who have seen some nice setups and media racks please give me some advise. I first of all want to make my media rack black so the light from my fuge doesn't go through into my tank. second, I want to use egg crate for the shelves to maximize flow... I would love to have a filter sock instead of filter floss or pads (bubbles are still getting stuck under them), if possible. I also want the to shelf that holds the floss or spock to be removable without taking out the whole thing so I can easily spin my cheato daily.

Any thoughts, ideas or concerns?

Alrighty... I'll be ordering in the black acrylic for this and the mods to my 10g today. Any suggested places to purchase?

Just to update this. I built my rack and placed it in today. I LOVE it. If I had known it would make this dig of a difference I would have done it forever ago! The flow is so much better through this one, the water height in my display dropped almost a quarter inch! Should have done this forever ago!

Sorry Matt, I just found this thread, did you find the black acrylic? If mind serves me right someone informed you about the eggcrate shelves many moons ago. Neutral Just a thought but to stop that light from the back what about a 1/16" layer of black abs sheet? It could be cut into pieces you could work in there, just a thought.

I did find the black acrylic. Snagged it from ebay. Made the rack out of the black acrylic and black egg crate. Looks great. Works great. :-)

I absolutely waited long enough. I just didn't realize how much of a problem my diy media rack really was. This completely solved my flow problem and my ATO problem. In a few weeks when I get my new pump I'm going to plumb it in different to allow me to keep the ATO switch installed in a better spot.

Hey Matt
Why you wanna spin the Chaeto? I never touch mine, the water flows through it just fine, I see no need to bother with spinning it. When I trim, I cut the Chaeto in the middle and remove the top half and just let it grow again, works great for me.

I haven't been. I was for a bit and it seemed to help it grow faster, but I haven't been been for awhile now. I was trying that when I started to get some algae growth.
