Adding Ultra violet leds! Empty Adding Ultra violet leds!

Post by DonnieP Thu 08 Sep 2011, 12:24 pm

Well I finally broke down and ordered me ten 3-watt UV leds to replace some of the factory leds in my JBJ 28g hood. I have had the feeling for a long time that the leds needed some UV in them to closer replicate the light from an actinic florescent bulb and now that the super ultra violet leds are on the market reasonable at $3.00 each, I'm gonna remove a few of my 14k leds and replace them probably about 5 at a time and see how it looks and works. I should not have to worry about UV burn because the JBJ has glass cover over the leds that will keep the uv from burning corals. Its just an experiment to cut down the intensity of the leds and at the same time add more blue and violet to the color. Any one see any problem with this thought please chime in here.

Specifications:

•Emitting Colour: Violet Blue
•Reverse Voltage: 5.0 V
•DC Forward Voltage: Typical: 3.6V Max: 3.8 V
•DC Forward Current: 700mA
•Luminous Intensity: 30-35lm
•Wave Length: 445-447nm
•Viewing Angle: 120 - 140 Degree
•Lead Soldering Temp:260oC for 5 seconds
•Intensely Bright

Electro-Optical Characteristics (Ta=25°C)

Item Symbol Conditions Min. Typ. Max. Unit
Forward Voltage VF If=700mA 3.6 3.7 3.8 V

Dominant Wavelength XY IF=700mA 445 446 447 nm
Luminous Intensity IV IF=700mA 30 / 35 lm

It will be a while, I ordered the leds from China so about 2-3 weeks to get here. I have seen the corals under just ultra violet and it is really cool but it gets washed out fast with the white light so its going to be trial and error and every change will require a complete disassemble of the JBJ hood, sounds like fun huh!

Eveyone is doing great Tony if we could just get rid of these fires and smoke, its tough on those two new Grandbabies. Man I have a single 1 watt UV led and just for kicks I temporarily hooked it up on a cell phone charger and held it over the pico last night with all the lights out, it was amazing to see all the corals glow the way they did, I'm hoping that with multiple UV's over the 28g that it will diminish some of the light intensity and at the same time give me more pop on the corals, I know it would with just the UV's but they say the white lights wash out the UV pretty fast but if its shining in the tank it should still give the same effect. Man your tanks looks good under the leds, is everything fairing well with the change over?

The ml-7uv i've got over the 10g is sweet! It's mixed blue leds and uv leds. They put out amazing color! I think your plan is a good one donnie. Can't wait to see it in action. :-)

Yea everything seems to really be doing well. I have noticed a considerable difference in growth, or so it seems anyway. I doesn't seem that I have lost any color either. You get a free afternoon and I am off, feel free to swing by and check everything out if you like.

+1 on needing UV light in a reef tank. Your coral will produce a slime to protect itself from the UV rays that reach them. Its good to have a balance so be careful not to overdue it but I think you would need a TON of UV rays to reach a harmful point. The slime they produce adds color to your coral in the blue purple and pink areas.

I have my leds in but not been in any hurry to tackle the desoldering and resoldering on the JBJ hood, its an ordeal just to disassemble it. After doing more checking I find that these leds are not true UV but more a super royal blue with 445-447 nm, true UV starting at around 400 nm. I'm still thinking it will give me the look I'm after and decrease intensity of the JBJ hood.

The par 30 fixture I picked up that has UV leds is pretty legit. The combo between the two lights looks fantastic. I hate to admit, but the color looks better than the lighting over my 29g. The white is just more crisp and the color from the actinic fixture looks pretty crazy. I have the same green monti cap in my 29g and my 10g and it looks way better under the expensive LED fixtures and the UV LEDs. Sad... but true. lol.
