I have a 40 gal breeder tank and want to build a sump and overflow for it and was wondering if a 20 gal tank would be big enough for this task. I will say now thanks for all of your imput.

I would go with a 20g long. I would first check the footprint of the skimmer and other equipment I wanted to keep in the sump and make sure it would fit though. :-)

Just a heads up, Ive got a 29G tank that I was using for a sump. More than willing to sell at a $1 per gallon if you are interested, Just need to rip out the silicone.

Sorry man, the dividers are already ripped out and in another sump. But the dividers were MAYBE 15 bucks for the sheet.

But I may still have some left over that you might be able to use.

I will have to check.

Are you even still interested in the tank at all?
