What kind of corals are you looking for? What where are you located? :-)

Tell us a little about your tank while you're here too. We love hearing (and seeing pics of) other peoples tanks!

I'm from Tyler. I have a 65 gallon tank. Around 45 to 50 lbs of live rock. I currently have some greenstar polyp and a bandit shrimp and hermit crabs and a false clown. looking to add to it.

I have the Marineland 36" double bright led with the moon led also. And I'm open to help with the coral.

if you could give us a list of the equipment you are running

skimmer
powerheads
filtration
maintenance schedule

also how deep is the tank, Im going to research this light a bit to see what it can and can not do. With that said you should be good with all softies and most LPS anyway.

Well scratch my previous statement. The regular DB LED from marineland is intended for "fish only" setups. They have a "reef" edition but it still looks like you will need more than one to keep anything above mushrooms. I will keep looking and see if I can find any better info.

8 x 1W Daylight LEDs 3 x .06W Blue LEDs

If that's the fixture there... it won't support corals. If they advertise reef capable, they're simply lying. I have a 120w fixture over my 29g, so a 9w fixture over a 65g will be nowhere near enough lighting.

Let us know if you're using a different fixture. We'd also be willing to help you pick out some different lighting (and sell your current lighting to a freshwater guy hopefully!). :-)

Corals I have, decorator crab- no. I have some different lighting options for you. Do you have a canopy over your tank? If your goal is to keep "Any" type of coral/ clams/ anemones... I have a 250w Metal Halide and 4 x 48" bulb T5 retrofit set-up with ballasts that would support any marine life. I could sell this for $110. All used, but in good working order. Being a retro-fit will require you to install/ mount it in some sort of canopy or hanging fixture. Ok, that was the salesman talking. Now the Hobbist. What do you want your Reef to look like? What do you want to keep? Buying "Used" can save you a bunch.... but only if it's what you really need. Otherwise your just wasting cash! Just like those exspensive Marineland LEDs... I'm sure the "Pet Store" people said "Oh.. yes. they'll work great on a Reef"! This hobby can become very exspensive enough without buying stuff you don't need or will have to replace sooner rather than later. Be leary of taking advice from someone trying to sell you thier product... But you've done the best thing by coming here and asking. Fellow hobbist are more than willing to help. Advice from another hobbist is 10x better than a salesman. Sorry for being "Long Winded"... Hope that helps.

FYI, if you call someone and they start throwing out the good ole bs line of "x watts per gallon", ask them what the PAR numbers are for x light at x inches. If they cannot answer this, hang up.

For SPS you want some where are 150+ PAR, more the better. My LEDs at surface produce somewhere around 600-700 PAR directly under the center of the LED heatsink. At 20" (2" off the sand) my lights produce around 120 PAR and was able to keep a small colony of sunset montipora growing, maybe not the same color as the mother colony it was from kept at about 12" down.

LPS do good in 80s - low 100s, around the same with softies.

There are plenty of ways to light a tank, but it mostly depends on what you want your tank to look like.

IMO The top 3 pieces of a tank that make it reef capable are
1) Lights - Metal Halide, High Power LED, T5 or combination of the 3
2) Display flow - return pump/powerheads
3) Sump - skimmer, P04/NO3/N04 removal system

Rock, sand, refugium, tank size/dimension, aquascape just add to it. If you have good lights, good flow and a sump that has a skimmer/nitrate-phosphate removal (chaeto/calerpa/scrubber) you can have an amazing reef tank in a couple months.

If you want to learn more about LEDs and reefs look at this site. http://reefledlights.com/

Well I have a remora skimmer. And nice flow. I would be interested in the light J.Davis but funds are low right now. I guess that's all I'm lacking to make any further progression. Yalls advice is very helpful. If you guys know anybody with a light that will work for the time being and are not asking much let me know. I'm not asking for anything free, just if someone upgrades an old one. Just until I get a better one. Thanks .

For the price of the light hes offering, thats one hell of a steal if you ask me.

You would be set indefinitely for anything and everything you wanted to toss in that tank, IMO. and for $110 I would pick it up if i was in need of a light.
