Battery backups

I would like to find a good battery backup I live out in the middle of nowhere and electricity always goes out and is always the last to get fixed. I have battery air pimps but if electricity went out in middle of night and I didn't wake up till late morning, I could be in trouble. What does anyone recommend that would work for battery back ups?

Only ones I've seen are at walmart in computer section good for a few hours. I'm sure you can go to best buy and get a better longer lasting one (more money as well)

They're difficult to find used anywhere. Buying new is typically your only bet. It's also not easy to order them online because they're extremely heavy and shipping is often outrageous!

Mine lasts me for about 45 minutes with my return pump and powerhead hooked up to it (it would last longer if I didn't hook up my powerhead, but I like pushing the button on the front of the backup when I want to shut my flow off for feeding). When the battery backup runs out, it sounds an alarm that lets me know that the power is out to my tank. Then I can add my battery powered airstone & kill the alarm.

Battery Back-ups are a good source of temporary power. They have thier limits though. Having one on a Nano is a good option for those unexpected power outages. I have an APC 650 I found in a yardsale. However this would be of little benefit on my 250g system. For it, I rely more on the volume. Takes alot to cause a temp drop or deplete it of oxygen.

I bought a APC Smart 2200VA UPS just for this reason.

I actually bought 2 just in case it looked like a serious power outtage instead of something like a few hours.

I would definitely get a generator though if power outtages are extremely common in your area just so you KNOW you have a backup to your backups. Redundancy is amazing.

You're definitely on the right path, you have to have a solid battery back up to ensure that power is provided when there's an outage. Pyrocide has 2200's which are pretty big units and must provide him a lot of run time, but you can manage with cheaper units.

Can you post the equipment you have along with the voltages on the equipment? You'll find that info on the power adapter or on the unit itself. If you can't find it, then post the model numbers of the pumps. I will get back to you with an idea of what you can use and what you'll get out of it.

Well I would like to get by with a battery powered air pump if that is possible till I get a generator

A couple of the battery air pumps from walmart will get you by just fine, they will last for hours on two d cell batteries, they got me through many outages before I had a generator. You could always buy you an inverter to plug into the lighter of your vehicle to that would run your circulation pumps, everything but a heater, if you want to power the heater the inverter will need to be big enough in watts to power it, inverters are really cool in an emergency.

Actually had my tank and gaming computer w/ modem and router running for just over 4 hours without lights over the weekend on 1x 2200. That includes a RIO 32HF, Reef Octopus 150 NWB, 2x MP40ESw, and a Maxijet 1200 for my BRS dual canister. The second was being used for my wii and TV. Gotta have the netflix during an outtage.
