Re: Fluval 405
your live rock and sand will be the biggest form of biological filtration. The cannister will aid in that aspect but it will be more of the mechanical side of things. If you are running a large bio load, then I highly recommend running a protien skimmer. You can get by without one, but it wont hurt to have that added help. Your # 1 fight with the cannister is making sure you keep it clean, they work very well when properly maintained, but if you slack on your mainteance then it will be the death of you .

Hands you over to the Dark Lords, though I know they're going to ask you size of tank, number of fish and probably pounds of LR.
I'll watch with interest to see the opinions given.

Re: Fluval 405
crushed coral is known to be a waste trap unless you vaccum it like gravel. Sand isnt a must , but its thought to be better than the crushed coral

Re: Fluval 405
Since rhe surface of the crushed coral is broken up, it allows stuff to fall down to where your clean up crew can't get it. Thats why it needs vacuumed. Same seal with cannister filters in a reef. It pulls that nasty stuff out of the water put then traps it in a little space where clean up crew can't get to it, so it must be replaced often. They can and do work though, and i've even saw where people will connect a reactor to the outlet and run phos through it also.

Re: Fluval 405
One of the nicest reef tanks I ever had, one of the first, used a magnum 350 canister filter hooked to a sloping bottom undergravel filter. I used the filter with no gravel or sand just had the liverock sitting on it. This was before we knew the need for pods in the tank. This was the cleanest tank I ever had, the canister filter is a high maintenance filter but keeps a tank very clean. If you use a canister it needs to be cleaned thoroughly at least weekly. I still use a magnum for ditritus removal ever now and then.

Re: Fluval 405
OK guys, I'm going for a crushed coral and sand mix, I like the blend of the two together and to me it looks realistic, I guess I will be working about a 50:50 mix in the tank, as I'm planning on moving some of the crushed coral down to thin cover the sump base where the LR will be.
I was planning on doing a "waft" of the tank base as I syphoned on water changes. Substrate should be under half inch deep, I would hate to have to dig the syphon in and lose life from the tank, what do you think?

Re: Fluval 405
I wouldn't use the Fluval to move the sand.. LOL. Moving cycled LS into the fuge is good. Better would be some "Used" sand from another tank... but only to accelerate the process.
