Dosing Articles

Post by matt_longview on Mon 17 Oct 2011, 8:39 pm

Hey guys,

I'm trying to research up on dosing. No matter what I read I'll always follow the advise that I'll never dose anything that I'm not testing for, but I want to know what this stuff does. Mag, Alk, Strontium, Iodine... ect. What's it do, how does it get depleted, what does dosing it do... all that good stuff.

So if anyone knows of any books that have sections devoted to this or any articles on this please let me know! :-)

I don't know anyone that doses anything except calcium, alkalinity and magnesium for stony corals and clams. Corals use those to build skeleton and nothing else really needs to be dosed. I think all those other things like iodine, strontium, etc. are present in salt mix and not really depleted. The trace elements are in the salt and it's such small amounts that if you did try to dose then you run the risk of easily overdosing. I think they sell that crap in bottles just to make money. Wet Pets used to always push bottles of "Strontium and Molybdenum" products on me and I've never heard of any successful reefer adding that to their tank. I see so many "regular additions of iodine will help in proper molting" on websites. I've never placed a drop of iodine in my tanks and my shrimp molt just fine. Have you ever seen a "Tank of the Month" that added "Kent Essential Elements"?

Sorry for the rant. I know that's not what you asked. lol!

Here's an article to get you started for reading my nonsense.
