New Biocube 29 Empty New Biocube 29

Post by Terrys1991 Tue 01 Nov 2011, 12:46 pm

New to hobby intro in Hello section, after research I decided to try a nano first, want to end up with fish & corals will need some help when time comes, I am starting out with cured dry rock and aragonite sand from Macro Rocks so it will be some time before I need add fish or corals. I have a Biocube 29 removed all the grid plates & bio balls, have 100 watt heater in first compartment, second compartment is empty as of now ( need advice on best set up Rubble, cheato, floss etc.) left sponge in third chamber with stock pump for now. Have one Hydor Koralia Nano power head for now, should I add a second one? Did leak test with fresh water all OK, 25 lbs. of rock arrived Sat. got in place & filled tank with RO/DI water mixed with instant ocean salt SG 1.025 @ 75º. 20 lbs of Bahama aragonite sand arrived Mon. rinsed about ½ and added last added to tank waiting for water to clear, to see if I want to anymore or not, the plan is to then test water parameters and start cycle with either a piece of shrimp or a cap full of ammonia then just watch and wait. This is where I am at the moment any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.New Biocube 29 Tank_w12

Sounds like you're doing things slow which is absolutely the way to go. I'd grab at least one piece of live rock from somewhere and seed your dry rock.

Do you have a test kit? Refractometor or hydrometer? Thermometer? Sounds like a great start. Donnie and I (and likely others) here on the forums use chemi pure elite and purigen. Can't wait till out clears and we can see some pics!! :-)

Is the back glass clear or black? can you post pics of the back so we can see the arrangement? You should remove the sponge also after the water clears up, these sponges are nitrate factories, just running water over the same ole dirt causes big time nitrates. A bunch of us have Chaeto if you need some. I would definately run Chaeto, chemipure and purigen iistead of a skimmer. You can check out my builds below and there are no skimmers, on these small tanks I personally think they do more harm than good , mine and Matts tanks speak for themselves on this. We are always willing to help.

Thanks Donnie, the back is black there is @ 6" x 8" clear window on back of middle chamber I'm guessing its for an external light, I will use Chaeto, chemipure, purigen per yours and Matts suggestion. By the way nice flathead, a buddy and myself have caught some big one at lake fork the past few years.

The clear is for a Chaeto light, I use the JBJ nanoglo in mine and it grows Chaeto great, I have to get rid of half of it evey week. If you are a DIY guy, you can buid you a new media basket for the tank that will hold the Chaeto and filter media, if you would rather order one already made I posted a link below, this guy builds some nice media baskets for all the nano's.

I believe he has his setup just like mine (maybe without filter floss?).

Mine is setup with a filter pad on the top, the chaeto algae in the middle with purigen on the bottom. I use the 100mL packet of purigen enough though they suggest it at 1mL per gallon. I only switch it out once every six months or so.

I do use the fluffy filter floss not the pad, floss first then Chaeto then Purigen, Chemipure is run through a DIY reactor.

Well it took 2½ days but the water finally cleared up. Water temp seems to be holding @ 78º will test water and kick off cycle this evening. I will build a media basket this weekend, and maybe a small reactor for chemi pure elite if I can locate all the parts I need.

Nice looking rock! I like the aquascape with the middle open. You got a good start just keep the pics coming as you progress. I built my media rack from 1/8' acrylic, it is plenty strong and leaves more room for the important stuff.

I used Weldon #16 in the tube, works great, I also used the 3/8" light grate. The 3/8" is of a different material than 1/2" and does not promote algae growth. I also enclosed all four sides to force water through the media and not let it go around it. The front glass on mine slides out for Chaeto trim, media change, etc.

Weekend didn't go as planned, I did meet Jason and he gave me enough Acrylic to build the media basket could not find the glue I needed locally will have to order online needed some other items as well ended up on the In-Tank website they had the chemipure elite, purigen, & the JBJ nano glo light so while I was at it I went ahead and ordered their media & fuge basket too. Jason if you want the acrylic back let me know. Tested my water every thing is where it should be did have some ammonia 0.25 ppm, will be keeping an eye on it really wanted to get my filtering set up before starting cycle, hope this doesn't cause any problems So in the mean time I bought a light timer at Petsmart (Aqualight Digital Power Center) it has two daytime & two night time plugs with four contasnt on could not get the daytime plugs to work individually, either both on or off guess I will return it and just get seperate timers for now. Thats where I am at moment will update as things change

Thats the way its supposed to work, if you need more daytime just get a three way and plug it into the daytime plug, that will give you four total, if you need more get another three way, that will give you six, same with the night. I would keep the timer, thay are very handy. Keeps from having so many timers just running one app.

Wait a sec. When the daytime plugs "yellow" are hot the nightime
"blue" are not and vice versa. So if you plug the daytime into a plug and set it for 8 am-10 pm when it goes off, the blue plug is then hot for night lights, same on the other plug, yellow is day and when it goes off the blue are hot so you should be able to do two daylight settings that way. This is how my coralife works.

I went with the "Zilla" power center. It's made by the same company, but branded for reptile tanks. The reason I went with this is because it had two controllable timers AND the daylight timer had an outlet that ran reverse. So I was able to put my actinics on from 2PM to 10PM, and whites on from 4PM to 8PM. Then I had the last outlet that automatically controlled my refugium light on reverse cycle with my actinics.

I also bought it when it was on sale for $30 instead of the full $42.

Honestly... three $5 timers will do the exact same thing.

I guess I have this all confussed at the moment I have two Actinic, two daylight, four moon light leds, and fuge light on way.
I was understanding that you use the blue to simulate dawn & dusk but left them on with the day lights.
moon lights & fuge lights would be in the night plugs, on when day plugs off.
Line me out please.
