Hello all...I was recently referred to this forum by Lone Star Aquariums in Tyler. (if not for them my tank would be a goodwill!) I have a 90-gallon freshwater and have no idea what I am doing! My tank has been green for most of its young life, I was ready to throw in the towel when I ran across Lone Star Aquariums. Let me just say the nice lady in there was WONDERFUL! My tank is now empty (except for my large Pleco) and on the mend. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we will be starting over with Cichlids! I love pretty aquariums and pretty fish, and really hope I can figure this out!!!

I also have a small tank I was given...thinking I need to start it up with something pretty, it is a 3-4 gallon tank that is almost completely closed in with a hole in the top for access...and ideas?? Easy ones? Wink

Depending on the size of the hole, taking into account water surface area, and the filtration you will use, and the water movement of the surface of the water, yeah it get's that bad, then....
Planted or not, as in real plants.
Sounds to me like a circular large face are, but thin depth bowl I've seen in Wal'nasty.
I would look at either a single Beta, or maybe 3-4 small tetra's. Again it's down to the water surface area of the tank and how much the water surface is moving, to oxygenate the water.
I still like the saying "It's not how many fish your tank will take, but how few your tank will take, to still look natural".

We had it set up or awhile (I guess it made me think I had to have a bigger one again) while it was up my kids had a water dog and two bait shop fish rescued from my husbands live well.. Haha. They were doing good and we then moved them to the big tank and added a baby bass. Originally I wanted to set up the big tank "Texas style", but it didn't take long to realize bass are nasty and will co exist with NOTHING!! Lol. I am sure this started my string of problems with the big tank but after the bass went to live with his friends I completely started over with the big one... Unfortunately I left the koi.. Lol. Anyway the small one was good while it was running but I may have been a fluke so I figured I'd ask around before I started again! Thanks for all of the help Smile[url=Way out of my League!! It has a hanging filter in the back probably about 1/3 the width of the whole tank, the one in the pic is not mine, just a stock pic i found that is just like it.

What about some guppies? As live bearers they will soon start breeding, so some fake grass would help the survival rate. And hopefully keep your kids interested in spotting the fry.

That sounds perfect...i can't believe i didn't think of them. We looked at guppies for the big tank once but they were so small i was afraid they wouldn't be noticable in there! lol We tried Mollies, but never got babies...my kids would love that! Thanks again for all of the help!

Hi , jlr, and welcome to the forum . You've got green water because your nitrates or phosphates are too high . Do a search on cycling an aquarium .

Buy some fresh water test strips ( available at most pet stores ) and test your water religiously . When the nitrates get too high , do a water change. I try to change roughly 25% every two weeks . For a larger tank I would recommend buying a Python . It hooks up to your sink and allows you to remove / replace water from the faucet. Be sure you add de-chlorinator and match the faucet temperature to the tank water .

The more the fish eat , the more they poop. Their waste rots down into ammonia and eventually turns into nitrates . Larger fish tend to produce more waste ( especially if they're fed regularly) . I'm guessing the kiddos enjoy feeding the fish . That's fine but the fish don't require feeding every time they look hungry. They always look hungry, lol.

The more fish / food in your tank , the more water you have to change.

I don't have anything live... Just plastic and silk!! Lol. I hope I can keep the fish alive and well, not nearly brave enough to try plants yet! Haha Wink

That would make an excellent dwarf seahorse tank .

Wait a while before you try it , though . Wink

If you're wanting a "native" tank , I'd start with plants like elodea (hydrilla) or foxtail then introduce Gambusia ( mosquito fish- related to guppies). After their population is established add really small sunfish ( bluegill/ "perch" / etc. ) , and maybe a small mudcat. Bass / gar / grinnel are at the top of the food chain around here so be prepared to feed them a lot.
