I have been thinking long and hard about starting a 29 gallon saltwater tank. This will be my first try at doing saltwater. Any suggestions on how to get the tank ready?

First question is what do you think you would want to keep in it? Do you have something specific in mind? I ask, because what you are wanting to do with it impacts further discussions. For example, you probably will only be able to do a few fish, and you'll have to be selective with which ones you choose.

Second important question is have you been using the tank as freshwater? If so, have you ever treated with copper?

Few questions there and then we can expand on that.

Ok i for sure want a dwarf angelfish, then maybe a hawkfish, and some gobies. what do you suggest instead? i havent the slightest clue on what would be good with what.

Yes the tank i am using is freshwater. I have never treated it with copper or any chemicals.

Just my opinion but with a nano tank if you keep a reef tank or fish only or a combination of both, you should remember with a small volume of water, things can go bad fast. On my 28g nano reef, I change 4 gallons every two weeks like clockwork. With a small tank you need to make a plan and stick to it, research your filtration methods. There are already two nano tanks threaded here, check them out.

I don't use a skimmer, don't like them, biweekly water changes along with chemipure and Purigen filtration are the way to go. You got to member though that those water changes have to be done, they should not be put off because you didn't have time to mess with them. Small tanks are really fun but they are work to, so Research Research Research!

I just put together a new to saltwater topic over in the general reef forum.

Here's a link.
