Great place to buy Liverock! Empty Great place to buy Liverock!

Post by DonnieP Sun 16 Jan 2011, 1:57 pm

Just wanted to let you folks know about this fellas place that has the absolute best liverock I have ever seen. I bought rock and sand from him when I set up my tank and it was by far the best rock I have ever seen. The guys name is Dan and he owns and runs "Gulf Live Rock" I will post a link to his place below, if you go there he has a picture of my tank on his gallery page, its the first top pic on his gallery page. There was so much live stuff on this rock it was insane, I still have a hand size piece of Starlet Coral that made the trip and is still growing, all kinds of macro algae. Check out the picks below of the shipment when it came in. You get a nice break if you buy with pay pal but call Dan, he will make you a great deal. I had mine shipped to Shreveport on the airline and it was only out of water for less than a day, big difference when you are buying liverock.

I got fifty pounds and it was more than enough for my 28, there were two boxes full to the top. Remember this is wild rock, not cured and its probably going to have some unwanted hitch hickers in it, I got two Mantis shrimp out of mine but it was well worth it, I am still seeing things I didn't see before. I have large pieces of sponge that are still thriving and a large Starlet coral still thriving. Several brittle stars and mini stars are still in the rock, its amazing. It was worth every penny.

You'll get a cycle every time you add some unless you cure it once it's in for 6 to 8 weeks.

I think it would be cool to do a liverock only tank with this rock. The macro algae alone are as colorful as some corals.

You will definately get a cycle each time you add rock, How much cycle depends on how long the rock has been in transport, how much die off was in the rock.it is best to do it all at once and let the tank cycle before adding any livestock, it took my tank two weeks to fully cycle from scratch, I just peeked at my reef log.

so it will affect the rock and whatever is living on it ? im not going to be adding fish for a few months untill i get the hang of the nano tank set up, if it will kill the stuff living on the rock then i will do it all at once and let it cycle once

Do it all at once and let it all cycle is best. But... that's not exactly what I'm going to do either. So it's not mandatory or anything. I'm going to buy some more for my nano in the future. I'll order it in, keep it in a separate empty tank for a few weeks until the cycle is over and then I'll add it to my tank.

Yeah, you can do as Matt says with another container but remember the suff on the liverock has to have good filtration and good lighting or the life that you bought it for in the first place will die off from lack of filtration and light. You would just about have to have another aquarium set up to do this in order to light all the live rock, and not run such a high Ammonia that it killed everything in the rock. If possible it is best to get all your rock at one time, saves on shipping that way too.

Donnie that's exactly what I'm going to do. I have this second tank I'm planning on setting up so I'm going to set it up with the sump and lighting before I order in the new rock. Should mention that when I'm saying things like that. :-)

When you get the rock, show us pics, I hope the ground shipping works out ok, I had mine flown to Shreveport and picked it up at the airport, short time out of water. The cooler weather will be a big help, better to ship in cool than hot. Dan's a good guy to deal with isn't he? He will send you some good stuff.

Be sure to post on here if you get any hitchhikers you don't want. I'm sure a home could be found for some of them.

Wow, as cold as its been its a wonder anything would survive on a truck! I know what your talking about on the big clam looking thing, I have a bunch of those in mine that are still doing good. You will notice more in the coming days, the clams close up with water and are pretty tough. You are right though, shipping via airplane is best way toi get good live rock. Send us some pics!

Yeah but give it a few days, you will be surprised what comes out of that rock, thinking about it, the cold might actually have helped. I had a Porcelain crab show up in my tank probably three months after I got the rock. You should start seeing brittle stars and stuff start showing up, You should find several of those clams. some are called Turkey Wings.keep us posted on what you find. You posted the pics while I was typing my last post :>)
