Thoughts

Post by Grimreefer on Sat 14 May 2011, 10:58 pm

I was curious to what everyones opinion was on cycling a tank. Here is the cenerio.

If I take the water from my existing 120 when doing a large water change to fill my 58, put cured live rock in it from the 120, and fill the sump with cheato from the 120, will it shprten the cycle period? I was thinking it should shorten it significantly. What do y'all think?

Tony

if going bare bottom, then you shouldnt have a cycle period. If you are adding new sand, then you may have a small cycle.

Keep in mind - that is only if the rock is not allowed to dry during the transfer.

I say transfer - let it run for a day or 2 just to settle and clear - test - and stock if test is good.

Good Luck

If you are using rock from your tank and water you will not have a cycle period, if you want to add dry sand, say 3/4" deep you still will not have a cycle because you are not adding any dead stuff. Just be careful changing that much water from your 120, I would change out 25 gallons and put that into the new tank and finish it with new water. I don't see a cycle here at all.

I moved my rock and water from Jason's about 5 minutes up the road and used approx 15 to 20 gallons of his water and I didn't have a cycle either. I used dry sand too. That's why I'm lucky keeping SPS in a 4 month old tank! :-)
