Anyone know how to program a police scanner?
I just got one and I had no idea it took a rocket scientist to make it work. Anyone know how to program these things? I did a lot of reading and tried to program it, I still can't pick up anything.

Ok, thanks. I actually thought I did it right but I'm not picking up anything. I just hope someone can point me to what I'm doing wrong.

Do you know the freqencies you are wanting to scan like Marshall PD Longview PD etc? If you know the frequencies all you gotta do is put it in manual mode and put in the fequencies.
Press the "Manual" button on the scanner. This will stop the channel scanning process.
Enter the channel that you would like to start programming. For instance, if you want to program channel 10, use the numerical keypad to enter 1 and 0, then press "Manual" again.
Enter the frequency number. For instance, if you want to program 155.345, use the keypad to enter 1 5 5 "Dot button" 3 4 5. Press "Enter" when you have entered the correct channel.
Press "Manual" again to program additional channels and repeat steps 3 and 4. If you make a mistake when entering the frequency, you can redo step 3 and 4 to reprogram the frequency correctly.
Press "Manual" when you are done programming all of your preferred frequencies, and the scanner will start scanning.
Hope this will work for you. I have a few local frequencies but don't know who they go to, it been long time since I used one.

Re: Anyone know how to program a police scanner?
I looked up all the frequencies on radioreference.com I entered them all in and put it on "scan" and it only picks up occasional static. I must be doing something wrong. This is totally new to me and I'm not even understanding the terminology that goes with it and it's not even my scanner my wife wanted it and it's been sitting there for 2 weeks and she hasn't picked it up. I wasn't going to fool with it but now that I've picked it up it's WAR now and I will figure it out.

Just put it on scan then go out your back door and fire off a clip.

Not showing up on my "Free" ap.. they do have a paid version 5-0 Radio Pro. Might have more available stuff. I've been listening to my brothers PD up in Jersey and where Dan's on vacation in FL. Pretty cool for free
You can get more local "Feeds". I'll research it some.. see what I can come up with.

I shot off more shells than I can count in my back yard and I haven't seen a police yet. Advantages of living in the woods.
I had hell with the scanner but I finally got it to work. These are complicated pieces of machinery. Picture the old computers that didn't do anything but a black screen and a blinking cursor unless you programmed it to do something. I think I'll stick to simpler things like reef tanks from now on.

I had one years ago but got bored with it. Mainly a bunch of minors in possession and doughnut calls. It would probably be a lot more interesting nowadays.

True dat. My place used to be the firing range. I have a large hackberry tree in back that finally split in two from all the lead injections.
