Polyp?? Not sure Empty Polyp?? Not sure

Post by JamesB Wed 21 Mar 2012, 7:28 pm

I have this thing in my tank. First signs of life and came in as a hitch hiker of some sort. It looks like a polyp but I am thinking that it's not. It was on a rock at the bottom of the tank right on the sand bed and it moved up the rock to perch on the highest rock in the tank and since doing so has split. It has every feature of a polyp but I didn't know polyps could walk around like an anemone can or is it some type of anemone? Need you all's expertise on this one, cause I am stumped. I tried getting decent pics, but it is a little hard to do, I am just hoping they are good enough for you guys to make an ID with.

Polyps can walk but Google "Majano Anemone" and see if that's what it is. If it is then kill it and kill it good or they will be a real pain later. If it's a polyp then enjoy your free coral. Smile Hard for me to tell from the pic.

Edit: I just re-read your post and saw it walked up the entire tank...most likely a Majano. Polyps won't move that far.

I would definately say Majano Anemone and Gabe is right, you better kill it now while you only have two. I would inject it at the base with boiling water, I find that works better than anything else. You gotta use a hypodermic needle and inject it though not just sqirt hot water on it. You can get the needles at a feed store or pharmacy.

Well thank you guys, seems you are right and I am really disappointed. LOL The first thing that grew in my tank and I have to get rid of it, haha. Alright, taking it out now. Thanks again

Having too close of a relationship with Majanos in the past.. 3rd confirmation. Yep, sadly it has no place in a reef tank.

To remove mine I covered them with a frag plug. They would attach to the frag plug and climb on top of it to get to the light... then I just threw away the frag plug. It was a little but too easy.

They'll behave similar to other anemones. The usually attach their foot into a hole and then stretch out into the light. If something bothers them they'll pull themselves into the hole.
