New to the hobby and forum
Thanks for your hospitality JoseH. I am very interested in starting a tank and would like to visit a local store to introduce myself to the hobby and those who are dedicated to the hobby.I would like to learn more before getting into it.Any suggestions would be welcome.I live in Panola County and work in Longview.

Re: New to the hobby and forum
First.. Welcome to ETAK! A lot of this can.. usually will, seem overwhelming at first. The best recomendation I can make to Anyone starting out is to visit with someone who has one. See for yourself, ask question.. look not only at what's in the tank.. but underneath at the equiptment. Local fish stores are not typically the best place to learn... nothing against them, but it's thier livelyhood to sell. Been there, done that. Your learn far more from Hobbist who care about what they are doing and can lead you in the right directions. With all the new members coming onboard, I'm going to cut-paste this post For those that live (or work) in Longview, your more than welcome to come by and see my systems and ask questions.

I agree, best to find a couple reefers in your area to learn from. Don't be afraid to ask a ton of questions on here as well, I am pretty new around here and I have been treated very well by everyone here. I like this place and the people here can't be beat, in my opinion.

Re: New to the hobby and forum
Welcome to the forums! There are tons of great people on the forums who are extremely knowledgeable and willing to help! There are members here who were keeping marine fish before I was alive! :-)
Here is a great thread with several articles to get you started.

Re: New to the hobby and forum
If you work in Longview you are lucky, as there are several experienced members there. I, having got to know Jason over the last year, would suggest you take him up on his offer, he's forgotten more than I've learnt in the last 12 months, and I've learnt a bundle!

Re: New to the hobby and forum
Thanks to all.I look forward to getting involved and learning.I'm going to do alot of research before jumping in with both feet.I do know that if I get into it I will have to go saltwater for sure.I've been reading the beginner thread and looks like bigger is better. That scares me a little bit but I think sounds worse than it really is.
Thanks, Jay W

You're officially an East Texan when you use the word learnt.

Re: New to the hobby and forum
Cracks up. Gabe, much as it may surprise you, but learnt is the past tense of learn to an Englishman.
Now "learned" is used too, but we would use "learned" as in "I met a learned professor today at college".
I looked up the difference over here, and found that Americans don't really use the word Learnt.
Therefore I claim that as East Texans are saying "learnt" that my mission to teach Texans to speak "English English" is succeeding. Y'all........oops.
