I believe I remember you posting about the low growth of algae ( coralline ? ) under led lights . Have you used them in FW ?

I converted the 77 Oceanic to a fw planted with Odyssea t-5s amd had some hornwort from a local lake that unfortunately introduced string algae into the system .
The fixture failed miserably ( both ballasts) so I went with the Marineland "Reef Ready " leds. The bigger plants are doing well but the string algae is turning white and disappearing.

I realize coralline and string algae aren't related but have you noticed any difference in the growth of nuisance algae since switching to leds ?

What I really noticed with the JBJ 3 watt 14k leds was that they were so intense that coralline would not grow. I have proved this because I unhooked 10 of the 25 leds a few months ago and have coralline growing everywhere now, so it was the high intensity of the leds that kept the coralline from growing not the wavelength. Don't know what effects leds will have on freshwater.

I knew that . Laughing

Intensity isn't the problem with this fixture . 54 x 1 watt , 9 blues and 45 10ks . Really just wanted to get my feet wet with an inexpensive fixture. The "tame" plants are doing well ( including vals) but the ones I collected like the hornwort and duckweed not so much . I decided to remove the hornwort because it was shading too much of the top as well as harboring the string algae. Good thing as I discovered a dragonfly nymph in there . Shocked

It makes the tank look purty (especially the cardinal tetras) but I think their " reef ready " claims are bogus . I might use two of them over a shallow softie tank . Rolling Eyes
