Re: 175 gal Tank build
Absolutely! I really want to do an LED tour with my light. Just pack it up one day and take it around to everyone's tank. lol. I'd have to be careful though... might end up costing a few people a lot of money!

Re: 175 gal Tank build
Yeah, but you know as well as I that in the long run they are cheaper, less electricity cost no bulb replacement cost for theoretically ten years, plus the added beefit of outstanding looks and no uv burn on the corals.

I got mine on Dec 28th. I think you picked yours up that next week... so hopefully you'll see a savings on the bill coming up.

Re: 175 gal Tank build
You guys should to hire a CPA to justify your purchase. Lol
I'm afraid that the high initial purchase price is going to make for a lousy Return On Investment. So lousy, actually, that you will need to replace them by the time you justify the purchase. The real benefits are no heat or UV burn and the looks if that's what you like. It's like anything else, if you have the money then go ahead and buy the BMW. If not, then stick to your Ford.

Re: 175 gal Tank build
What's the cheapest MH unit you could get for a 30" tank? I only paid $300 for this LED... that's not too expensive at all. A nano is a perfect application for LEDs though because they would heat up so quickly with MHs. Almost any tank could be lit by 3 of these units. Medium sized tanks (4x2x2) that aren't too long could be lit by 2. I'd rather look around for the BMW at the Ford/Chevy price. ;-) lol
The look is the biggy for me, but I've never had to deal with too much heat or UV burn before. It's about the perfect color for me. Some days I look at it and I wish it were more blue, then others I look at it and wish it were less blue. So I think I'm close!

Re: 175 gal Tank build
That's definitely a more expensive start up cost. The MH units were close in price for me and I would have had to get a chiller with it as well... which put even the initial cost for MH way higher. Another draw back to a nano... lol.

Re: 175 gal Tank build
Matt, the only thing about those led units you have is that they are 1 watt leds. I don't know much about them but from what I read the 1 watt led units won't work as well on deep tanks. The price for your leds are good but once you start getting up into 2 and 3 watt led units the price gets really high. I think for a 175 gallon tank I would want to bump up the wattage on the leds. Just like you would go higher watts on deeper tanks for metal halides.
