Filter picking up sand.
So I just replaced my filter with a canister...and its picking up all the sand and making big clouds of it in my tank! scared its gonna kill my stock off so I turned the filter off and let the old one sit. How do I stop this from happening. Removing the sand is not an option I am considering. What do ya'll think?
I was told to put a nylon filter back around the intake of the filter?? But wouldn't this stop the unwanted particles from going into the filter?

Re: Filter picking up sand.
Cut the inlet pipe to the canister short so that its only 3-4" below the top of the water, then defuse the return water which is probably the cause of the sand stirring. You can defuse it by returning through a spray bar to the tank just under the surface. Its picking up the sand because the return is blowing the sand or the inlet to the canister is to close to the sand. Hope this helps!
Also make sure its actually sand and not air bubbles you are seeing, if its air you need to get the air out of the canister.

Re: Filter picking up sand.
Just turn off the filter and see if they rise or fall, air will rise sand will go to the bottom. It's probably air because the canister would filter out sand. You need to see if canister info tells how to bleed out air. Make sure all the hose couplings are tight.

Re: Filter picking up sand.
I generally lean my eheim or rock it back and forth to get the air out.
