Lots of sps keepers do bare bottom with good results. Some do a remote deep sand bed so it can be easily removed or taken off line if there are problems.

There is this stuff called star board too that you can put in the bottom so it looks like sand but it's just a solid piece. Might look neat for growing corals on it all over the bottom.

I would keep a thin layer of sand to keep any algae from growing on the bottom. Then when you do water changes you can siphone off the thin layer of sand and put down a new layer. I did this years ago with great success in a 120. I think it will be covered with algae if it is left completely bare. just my .02

i have that carribean sea arag-alive bioactive black sand from petco... and the only issue i see... and its really a f'd off issue.... when i magfloat my glass... occasionally... a piece of that black sand will stick to my magnet, so its got some iron or something in it... idk how that works in the long run in a reef... but all my stock seems to be doing well. its just something i have to look out for bc i dont wanna get a piece stuck on my mag float and then proceede to scratch up my glass draggin a rock across it...

i have to admit, it does look really sharp with the black sand. the corals really look more pronounced since you dont have all the bright colored sand making them look washed out. when i have actinics only, the sand disappears and the bright coral just jumps out and looks like its floating in nothing. AWESOME effect imo.
