What am I missing ???

wanting to setup a 5.5g barebottom SPS reef. no filtration or skimmer, just powerheads (possibly MP10), heater, and light(MH). there will be no fish just coral. the plan would be for 1.5g weekly WC's more frequent if needed. so my question is, what am i not seeing as a potential problem ? or is this actually a plan that could work, and i am over thinking it , and should have already started?

Only other thing I would do is some kind of ATO to keep the water stable and some food for the sps if there will be no fish. Sounds good to me!

it will be either for dosing , or performing small daily WC's if the calibration is accurate between the two pumps.

You wouldn't need to dose in a 5.5g. You could likely do your WC when a turkey baster. lol

I'd feed phytoplankton and have a live rock rubble area for some pods. Maybe even keep some tank grade macro-algae.

Kind of my thinking, that the WC's would be enough. My overnight sleep gave me the idea of possibly drilling and running a 2.5g either behind or under, just to hide the heater and float switch. still undecided on that part though.

I'd throw a 10g under there. A 10g tank will likely be cheaper than a 2.5g... unless you were just going to put it in a jug, and it will give you a little bit better chance at making mistakes. You could also use the 10g as a refugium for your chaeto and a QT tank for small inhabitants that will go into your main display.

Read this on the DFWMAS forum as well and I'd have to backup the idea about using LEDs instead. Although if you use the 10g and run a fan across it I imagine the heat would be fine from a MH. Someone also said you had to have fish... not true. I would put a cool shrimp pair in it or something... anything that you have to feed really. But it doesn't have to be a fish.

Oh btw... I'm glad you're trying this because I'm going to do one of these too. lol

well got home from work MUCH later than planned , so this is delayed at least until morning.

I already have the lighting and the 2.5g, but I have a 10g as well. I would entertain the LED suggestion but trying to use the equip. that I already have, and leave the money for coral. I also read the comment from Marc on the DFW thread, and I disagree with the fish thing 150% but I dont want to argue with him. Too much of a headache. If any critters were to be in there it would be inverts only and thats only to aid in helping clean the system.


anywho, planning stages will progress through the night. Will try to make the wifey understand why her opinion doesnt count , then proceed in pissing her off. Sounds like a full night.

but i would drill the tank with two holes on the back and fabricate my own minature sump and put some of that choate shit or whatever its called with some lava rock in it just make a small 6 inch long box on the back of the tank with glue and place a small pump in it is that possible to do and that would clean water you think or is this a stupid idea of mine ?

i think my wife just fucked my reef tank i did a ten gallon water change cuz my salinity was low and i asked my wife to mix salt in with the new water well she put three cups in one and two in the other and she didnt mix the salt in and well it got dumped in the tank ten gallons of unmixed salt water

you shouldnt have done a 10g WC just because your SG was low, you will end up doing more damage by changing the params quickly than if you left it a bit low. so sounds to me like you screwed yourself, the wife had nothing to do with it, she just helped you fail faster.

ive always increased my salinity that way by just increasing the salt level a little and fyi i do two water changes a month one ten one 15 this was time for the ten so my salinity was low but yeah im pretty sure i know how to take care of my reef tank ive been doing it for a while this was the one time i let the wifey mess with it and yeah i did fail on that part

i do a small ten gallon also because i have a lot of softies and the likes but everything is fine now sorry for jackin your thread just needed to vent lol
